Has anybody ever tried to build an upgrade system? Maybe something where you could add an ability to a piece for X points... I was thinking about making each ability cost more and more as you add it to pieces of higher rarity. Such as giving a common piece twin attack for 5 points but for an uncommon it would cost 7 and so on up to VR. All it would take is to print off nice looking cards for each ability and then you could slide the card under the upgraded piece's card like when you add equipment to cards in magic the gathering. Perhaps this sort of thing could never happen and would only make the game more complicated then it has to be. What are your thoughts on such an idea? Thanks

It has been tried before and the crux of the problem is that each ability is worth a different amount depending on what other abilities the character already has.
For instance twin attack on say someone like Han Smuggler would be worth quite a bit and make him cost more in the range of Han Scoundrel (or more), but twin on someone else (even another Han) could be worth quite less.
So you would have to make the "abilities" or "equipment" overcosted in order to prevent it from being uber-powered when maxed out and thus it would more than likely rarely see play. I mean there have been plenty of people talking about paying the 17 pts to give Luke Rebel Commando Twin by using Luke Hero of Endor and Camaraderie to switch him out. And that is to boost a Luke with +8 attack.

Look up the rules for the SWM(CE) campaign edition rules if you want to try upgrades in fun games at home. We used some of those one night for our league play and players had some fun with it.

+1 I'd highly suggest giving SWM:CE a try. It's a lot of fun. It's a hybrid of SWM and SWRPG, with probably more of a leaning toward SWM than the RPG. Basically, you start out with a level 1 guy, with low stats...and the more experience you gain (via mission objectives, killing enemy pieces, etc), the more you can upgrade your character by increasing stats and by adding new (or upgrading) SAs, FPs and even CEs. It's based almost entirely on the pre-existing SWM game (ie, it has SAs like Deadeye and Momentum and Lightsaber Sweep, which function exactly like they do in the skirmish game). Each new SA/FP/CE has a point cost, and some of them have prerequisites.
