Does Suppressive Fire get around energy shield when Morrigan would shoot a character adjacent to the shield?

At the PA regional the judges ruled that Energy Shield still works because it's the ally using the ability and Suppressive Fire only prevents the target from using special abilities.

During the chatbox of a SHNN show, in response to that ruling Sithborg said, "I would have ruled differently," or something to that effect. The idea being that the person benefiting from the effect is using the effect. I don't know if that was intended to be a ruling or just a personal opinion (and he was letting the PA ruling stand).

I don't think there is an official ruling anywhere in the Rules threads, but I will contact Google...

EDIT:

Here is a relevant earlier thread. Swinefeld argues that it should work. Sithborg doesn't say either way:

Sorry, that's all I found.

Suppressive Fire - On this character's turn, enemy characters attacked by this character cannot use special abilities or Force powers that respond to this character's attacks for the rest of the turn and enemies hit by this character's attacks cannot benefit from or grant commander effects for the rest of the round

Energy shield is using a special ability, i don't think it matters who's special ability it is. The target is unable to respond to the attack with special abilities therefore i can't see any reason why you would get to use energy shields against it.

This is from Scott in the design thread, discussing Suppressive Fire specifically:

Quote:
For a figure to use a SA/FP, they must have it. If it is on anyother figure, they are not using it. Thus it has no effect on a figure benefitting from an ally's Energy Shield.

That was also the intent by the design team.

I don't know why he mentioned something in the chat of SHNN or what exactly he said, but this is how it's been ruled in the past, and it's the official ruling.

Good. Thanks for digging that up. BlooMilk

Bump. This came up in SHNN this week. The show indicated Suppressive Fire stops Energy Shield, even on a different character. Above it indicates Energy Shield (on a different character) would work. Just looking for confirmation either way.

Also, see Destabilizing Attack. (for an example that shuts down an ally's (of the target) Energy Shield)

I'm not sure Destabilizing Attack and Suppressive Fire are comparable, since Destabilizing Attack refers specifically to all enemies, whereas Suppressive Fire only specifies someone attacked by the character?

@SignerJ: he agrees with you.

He put "Energy Shield (on a different character) would work" in bold to indicate that it does work. Destabilizing Attack has slightly different wording, and it does in fact work differently.

Correct, that is what I was getting at. I will reiterate the ruling quoted in Echo's post above.

For a figure to use a SA/FP, they must have the ability. If it is on another character, that character is using it. Suppressive Fire has no effect on a character benefiting from an ally's Energy Shield.

Thanks, Swinefeld. Being a Morrigan fan, it isn't quite what I hoped for, but the ruling makes sense and it's pretty clear now.
