To preface this, I already have the answer to this question, but wanted to post this for everyone's benefit. In the wake of Jason's regional win in Chicago where he transferred essence into force spirits, I wondered if there was a way to turn the tables. Could I somehow give a rakghoul a force point (yes), move adjacent to a spirit and spend it (yes) and if he fails the save, turn him into a rakghoul? I put this question to Swinefeld privately, intending to use this at my regional against Jason if he ran that squad. Before he could answer, I discovered on my own why I couldn't. Force spirits can never be considered adjacent. Along a similar vein, Sith Alchemy doesn't work because it targets. (Except, as Swinefeld pointed out to me, Sith Alchemy 6 which doesn't.) So, in epic matches, it IS possible to rakghoul a force spirit.

Rakghoul Disease (+10 Damage to living enemy; save 11. Whenever this character defeats a living enemy, you can immediately add a character named Rakghoul to your squad. The new character sets up in a square that enemy formerly occupied.)

Light Spirit.... An enemy within 6 squares can spend 1 Force point to defeat this character; save 11. This effect replaces that enemy's attacks

Unless Bloo is wrong, you should be able to do that. There is nothing about being adjacent or even targeting a spirit in these abilities.

It's pretty funny how Force Spirits have always been considered "Living." Oh well. LOL

The spirit doesn't count as a legal target, and cannot take damage, so how can it be killed and turned into a raghoul?

Interestingly, Advanced Rakghoul Disease requires adjacency. Regular Rakghoul Disease says nothing about adjacency - presumably because the original Rakghoul had melee so it was seemingly a moot point.

But if the Rakghoul is within Empathy and can spend someone's Force points (e.g. Palpatine on Throne), then it could defeat a Spirit and make it a Rakghoul. At least that's how I read it.

If a Rakghoul defeats the thing it's haunting, the Spirit is also automatically defeated. Would that count as the Rakghoul defeating the Spirit?

Spending a FP to DEFEAT this character apparently does not require targeting. Which raises another question: can you spend a FP on a spirit if someone else is in the way? Or even adjacent?

Yes. You don't need line of sight, either. Spending the FP to kill a spirit doesn't target, it simply requires you to be within 6 squares.

My discussion with Jim was just a quick facebook chat.

Now that I've had time to investigate...
The FAQ wrote:

Q: If a Rakghoul defeats an enemy with an ability it gained from a commander effect, perhaps Self-Destruct, does Rakghoul Disease create a new Rakghoul?
A: No. Rakghoul Disease only triggers when this character hits a living enemy with an attack.

That should answer all the questions, and Alchemy is definitely out.

Makes sense, though.
