Hey everyone, question about stand-in figures for tournaments. Is it acceptable to use whatever figure I want to represent a certain character, even one from WotC sets? I know the v-sets obviously only use stand-ins, but I wasn't sure about the originals.

Like using, for example, a Han that costs a few dollars to represent a Han that would cost me thirty dollars.

Is there a $30 Han?

I think the "official" answer is that you need the official WotC pieces. I don't think it's been enforced since about 2011, though. And if you're at a tournament, you can probably borrow the piece you need from someone anyway. Especially if you give them a heads up that you need it.

Thanks for the help.

Now that I think about it, no, there probably isn't a $30 Han, I was just using that as an example.

I've never had a problem if someone wanted to use a different model. Seriously, Han is Han...and he's not going to be confused for Chewie or Luke or Leia...and so it has never mattered to me if someone used a different model, as long as it was crystal clear which card that model represented.

If I was a TO I would not have a problem with people using proxies for WotC pieces, as long as the card was 100% legal. But I'm not a TO, so maybe it doesn't matter what I think. :)

The most important thing is that you have the correct card, and it's clear what miniature is representing the card. I use different miniatures to represent the same persona all the time; usually I'll use the Rebel Storm sculpts of Han, Boba Fett, and Mara Jade even if I'm playing Han Smuggler, Boba BH, or Arica, for example.

That's the way I've always enforced it for tournaments I've judged, also. To be totally safe, it's best to have the original WotC materials, but clarity is the most important thing.

you could always try to get in touch with the TO before the tourney to make sure it's OK, but like just about everyone else said, it probably won't be a problem as long as it is clear what figure is representing what card. I have even seen dice used to represent Genosian drones in a game at the kokomo regional last year. That was a situation where both players were running Poggle bomb swarms and it was getting really confusing as to who's drone's were who's so one of the players simply removed all of his drone figures and used dice to represent them for the rest of that game which helped to speed the game up and made it less confusing for both players.

Excellent question OP,
and thanks for posting - it is likely that SWMini pieces will accrue some value, and some of the WotC han's went for some decent moneys back in the day (Han Scoundrel, Han Hero of Endor etc).
Imperial Assault is also releasing a Han figure, which will be in heroic 30mm scale, and thus a little larger but compatible with SWMinis.

I'd have to echo Echo24,
and say, so long as you have the right stat card, thats the main thing.
Everybody wants to be 'reading from the same songsheet' in a tournament setting.
You also want the play-token to represent the figure as best as possible.

At an official tournament locally in 2009, a piece was stolen during tournament - and it was permissible for the player to play (and go on to win) using only a folded postit note reading 'Chewbacca" as the square token hehe.
I'd say, unless the tournament is not one in which you'd want to partake anyways, you'll be alright to use printed cards and 2Dtokens.

Luckily, there are better options than manually resizing images in GIMP/Paint, or using a postit note
pepakura (papercraft) tokens that you'll find in the
"Custom Minis FAQ" thread of the Custom Forum - if they're still there, I think yours truly linked to them there. BigGrin
There's also google search hehehe.

2D tokens are part of the proud tradition of making custom miniatures...

You can print out the tokens,
and then use a smart-strip or coin, washer, bottlecap etc... to attach the token to a base of 'legal size'.
At this point, I also recommend scotchguard, because pepakura/papercraft models are hydrophobic (they are watermagnets, and get soggy when wet). BigGrin
If you're feeling more adventurous,
there are aliens and vehicle pepakura/papercraft that you can make too - the LAAT/i or LAAT/C gunship is difficult to make hehe.
The vulture droids or hailfire droids are also difficult to make. The Spider Homing Droid, less so.

If people let people use 3D custom figures or postit notes in tournaments,
I'm sure it'd be fine to bring some 2D tokens to a tournament.

Happy days,
and hopefully you're able to find an agreement to play,
either in tournament, or in your local game store/club for fun.
Thats the main thing -fun- who cares what the minis are really BigGrin

(and worse case, there's always vassal online) BigGrin

I am all for more people playing. If that means stand in figures, borrowing them, or any other form - as long as it's clear to all players what figure is what, then play on.

I had a friend who doesn't play often and owns no figures hit me up before the Chicago Regional. I happily lent him the figures and cards for the whole squad he built.

Bottom line is this: If you want to play - we'll help make it happen.

Yep, I have never had a problem using proxies.

This past weekend I had some Gotal Fringer Promos standing in for Rodian Brutes and I remember a certain Vong squad I ran last year that had some Vaders and Aurra Sing stand-ins as well as some others.

As long as you know who everyone is, have the stat card for everyone and your opp can easily differentiate between your pieces it is fine. I wouldn't allow like all uggies with this one being that guy, etc, but as long as everyone is easilt identifiable it shouldn't be a problem.

Chicago Regional 2015, there was a guy who doesn't get to play all that often and is actually moving away so he will probably play even less. He contacted me the night before the regional and asked if there was anybody who had a 27 pnt lobot he could borrow. He asked if it was permissible to print out the card, that he had a clobot mini he could use if that was ok.
I told him that was fine. I want more people to play, I was not going to turn this guy away, especially after he took the time to contact me. He printed out a Lobot card and used the Clobot proxy as a mini. I had no issue with it and no one at the regional said otherwise to him or me.
We will be more than happy to work with you to allow you to play. If that be borrowing or using proxies or printing out cards, I am always willing to help you and encourage you to play.

I don't think anyone will have a problem with a proxy fig or even a card that was printed off because we just need players now a days.

I also judge and will try not to turn anyone away from the game.

I think the Indiana Regional a few years back is where the only problem of this came in. The player was using my little pony figs with blaster or lightsabers sculpted to them. As a judge I now know that is too far. My rule is basically figs needs to be a clear representation of the character to your opponent.

Droids should be droids. Jedi should have lightsabers. I think you get the drift.
