Lord Kaan's thought bomb wording
Thought Bomb (Force 5, replaces turn or when this character is defeated: 80 damage to all living characters within 6 squares; save 11 to reduce damage to 40. Remove this character from play. This Force power cannot be canceled.)
Darth Malgus CE wording
Droids are subject to this effect: At the start of this character's turn, you may choose an ally within line of sight. Remove the chosen ally from the battle grid, it is defeated. You may then place a target enemy character of equal or lower point cost and the same base size in the defeated character's square.
What happens if you use Malgus's CE on Kaan? Does thought bomb go off?

I'd assume so, since it triggers when he is defeated and the CE says that the person you remove is defeated. Interesting combo.

I think I've heard that allies with Self-Destruct who are removed via Tactics Broker are still detonated, so I assume this would be the same.

It doesn't work that way. Malgus's CE states that the target is removed from the battle field before it is defeated. So while you can still target Kaan, and Kaan's Thought Bomb would trigger, he's no longer occupying a space at that time. So no, you cannot damage anything with Thought Bomb if you use Malgus's CE to defeat Kaan.
