I've been looking at some custom pieces and official pieces, and I'm just wondering...how powerful is Avoid Defeat, in-game? I've always considered it as a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of SA, but apparently some people see it as a big deal on Atton "Jag" Rand, so what do you think of it? Is it a powerful SA that should noticeably affect the cost of a piece it's on, or is it more flavorful than actually useful?

It's relatively minor. I've played both with and against Jaq many times, and it rarely has a huge impact on the game. Sometimes it does, but sometimes crits do too, that's the nature of the beast. It definitely affects the cost of a piece, but not as much as a serious defensive ability like Evade. It only has a 50% chance of working with a single FPRR and 25% of the time without the reroll, and there are enough multi-attackers that a character with it still usually dies in the phase it would have died in even without it.

The dislike of it is usually just that it's a high variance, high influence ability. When Atton does survive because of it and gets to activate and win the game, you're gonna remember that forever. But that doesn't happen a whole lot.

minor inconvenience, I've made both saves once, and I think Joe maybe twice.
even if both saves are made, you come back with 10 HP.
you'll die again soon enoughHuh

However I really like the new escape death-like CE that Passal brought to the game for huges. It is fitting as they should be tough I take out and happens 50% of the time which makes it more fun. Avoid defeat is almost into reserves level territory for unlikely. So I consider it minor, as proven by the new Mara Jade.

I actually really like the ability, especially on Atton. Last time I used him he made 4 successful resuscitations and lived to the end of the game. I guess its all about luck, I'd price it around half of what you'd add for evade because you need two saves and all that.

One time (400 points all Unique game I believe) I saved Avoid Defeat with Jaq 4 or 5 times (and I think I still lost...) lol, but in general I don't think it has too much influence in the game. As something given out en-masse (like with Leia/Poggle's CEs, though 1 save 16 is arguably tougher to make obviously, if you have FP to reroll especially) I can see it being a major problem though.
