Yuss!

That most special day of the year is finally upon us. This coming Saturday, 17 (at this stage!) combatants will descend upon Lower Hutt, New Zealand - more specifically Naenae College - to commence the 4th NZ Championships! While we sadly miss some big names in the game this year (Bev and Bob from Hawera, doug*platapus and Mike Moore Smuggler to name a few), we will also include four brand new/superkeen players heading into their first NZ Major! And 17 is no small number either as it will sit alongside 2013 which also had 17 players, just behind 2012 and 2014's 19 entrants.

As we draw closer, we might talk squads and players and such, but I wanted to take a moment to look back at the records of the some 28 different players who have fronted up for our Nationals over the previous three years. There have been some big NZ players who have done well - and some who surprisingly haven't! What follows is a list of the 28 players which includes: Name (obviously), their BF (or Best Finish), the number of NZs (or Nationals) they've played, and their record.

Graham/TheHutts; BF: 2012 Champion [3 NZs; 15-4]
David/Dr. Daman; BF: 2013/14 Champion [3 NZs; 15-4]
Tim/MiniTankHT; BF: 2012 RunnerUp [2 NZs; 11-2]
Kezzamachine; BF: 2013 RunnerUp [2 NZs; 7-3]
Aaron/Sharron; BF: 2013/14 SemiFinalist [3 NZs; 10-7]

Robin; BF: 2012 SemiFinalst [1 NZs; 3-3]
Oli/Darth O; BF: 2014 SemiFinalist [3 NZs; 10-6]
HaweraDave/doug*platapus; BF: 2012 SemiFinalst [2 NZs; 6-5]
Mike/Smuggler; BF: 2012 5th (amended to 3rd) [2 NZs; 6-3]
Paul/Darth Moore; BF: 2014 6th [3 NZs; 8-7]

Bob/kfcswaitingforyou; BF: 2014 7th [2 NZs; 6-4]
Bevan; BF: 2013/14 8th [3 NZs; 7-7]
Ian; BF: 2014 9th [3 NZs; 6-8]
Rich/Darth Rattlehead; BF: 2013 9th [3 NZs; 4-10]
Stuart BF: 2012 11th [2 NZs; 4-5]

Nick; BF: 2014 11th [1 NZs; 1-3]
Hayden;HaydenSolo; BF: 2013/14 12th [2 NZs; 4-6]
JP; BF: 2014 13th [2 NZs; 3-7]
Glyn; BF: 2013 13th [2 NZs; 2-6]
Henko/ThePurplePhurlp; BF: 2014 14th [2 NZs; 2-7]

Ethan/Ewaesomer; BF: 2014 15th [1 NZs; 2-3]
Andrew; BF: 2012 15th [1 NZs; 1-3]
Derek; BF: 2013 16th [1 NZs; 1-4]
Danny; BF: 2012 16th [1 NZs; 1-3]
Alan; BF: 2013 17th [2 NZs; 2-6]
Zakk; BF: 2014 17th [1 NZs; 0-4]
Dan; BF: 2012 18th [1 NZs; 0-4]
Kahu; BF: 2014 18th [1 NZs; 0-4]

We have 28 players who have been to Nationals, 19 of them two or more. Of those 19, 11 of them will be attending on Saturday and we'll have 7 players who have been to all four (I'd be an 8th, but I judged the first one).

Our top 8 (which you can technically stretch to 9 - long story) have all been to the Top 4, but - of course - only one can win it all and that was Hutts in '12 and then Daman in '13 and '14.

Who can we expect this Saturday? Well, I won't know till the day. But of that prospective 17, four of them have previously been Major winners: Graham (HaweraCon'10, HaweraCon'11, LowerHutt'12, NZ'12, HaweraCon'12), Daman (LowerHutt'13, NZ'13, LowerHutt'14, NZ'14, HamilCon'15), Aaron (LowerHutt'10, HamilCon'14) and Paul (HaweraCon'13, LowerHutt'15). Sadly, we will be without Bev (HamilCon'13) and Mike (HaweraCon'14) - our other two Major winners.

It's worth noting that, with 28 players having been to Nationals thus far, plus 4 new players this year, we only have 19 other players who have played competition games in NZ and not been to a Nationals. I was surprised by that stat the most!

Will our Champ be Daman again? Or back to Hutts? Or will Aaron or Paul step up to take a third Major along with a National title? Or will it be someone else new? I'm so excited, I can hardly wash!

Have I ever mentioned that I wished I lived in New Zealand? In case I haven't, I wish I lived in New Zealand.

I hope you guys all have a great time!

And may a squad without a Klatooinian Assasin win!

Every year, the person who won LowerHuttACon has gone on to win Nationals. Smart money's on Paul.

Okay! More details will come soon, but some highlights are:
I came 5th with 7pts!
The Top 4 were 1) Aaron/Sharron (NR Modified Art Class), 2) Graham/Hutts (Imperial Modified Double Swap), 3) Paul/Darth Moore (Imperial Double Swap), 4) Dave/Dr. Daman (Imperial Daala).
Aaron edged out Dave in a tense Semi, Graham 3pt'd against Paul.
Graham held on against a tough Aaron in a super-intense final...
The Hutts is back on top!

Maybe Graham should to a Rolling Player of the Day thread. If so, he (TheHutts) would be rated a 10 or 11!

Congrats, dude!

More than one way to skin a cat and more than one way to build an imp double swap. So glad you did it with just boba!

To be honest, I was very lucky in the final. I made one very crucial Unleash The Force save (with Boba on 50hp), and had a few other things go my way as well. I also was very lucky to avoid Daman's squad all day - I would have struggled against it. I think my squad was really good (thanks Darth Moore.....), I just could have run it better, and I didn't calculate the Marn/Lobot/Gha Nachkt permutations properly in my games against Sharron - I could have actually got an activation advantage in the final if I'd worked it out better. This is the squad:

--It's in His Chiss (The Swap Swap Squad) NZ Championship Winner 2015--
50 Boba Fett, Assassin for Hire
32 Thrawn (Mitth'raw'nuruodo)
27 Lobot
23 Imperial Governor
21 Marn Hierogryph
13 Amanin Scout
11 Admiral Ozzel
8 Mas Amedda
3 Mouse Droid
6 Rodian Brute x2
6 Ugnaught Demolitionist x2

(200pts. 13 activations)

If I ran it again, I might just dump the Amanin from the base for more activations - not sure....

I'll let him fill in the details, but Sharron's squad was the NR GenCon winner from 2013, with Gha Nachkt added - 15 Mouse Droid dump (did you hear that jak?).

I really liked the idea of double swap - and to be fair, I did express my interest in Imperial double swap back in 2013:

Quote:
I think I'd actually like playing Imperials if they had double swap.

I decided to change up the established double swap build a little - I decided early to go with a more extreme build with more activations where Boba was my only attacker. I played around with a build where I used Pellaeon to choose between Ozzel and the Imperial Governor as required, but I eventually decided I needed both. At that point, I realised Marn would be a really good fit - he would shut down my opponent's Lobot, and would mean that I could out-activate the majority of tournament builds.

3 Mouse Droid
6 Rodian Brute x2
6 Ugnaught Demolitionist x2
(200pts. 13 activations)

Round 1: vs JP - Kyle JBM, Wedge, Han Corellian, TBSV, Chewbacca on Rancor Pit
This was actually one of the worst possible matchups for my squad, with evade, disruptive, never tell me the odds, and a huge beefy bodyguard. JP set up a little loosey - he probably should have got all his key pieces around Chewbacca, but he had Kyle in gambit with a Mouse, and everyone else further back. I waited him out, then swapped in Boba, and hit Chewie three times, including a crit. I won init and swapped out again, and next round I got to ping Kyle at the end of the round - I hit three times and he failed all three evade saves. End of the next round I pinged Kyle again, and then swapped in Evazan to finish him off, then it was relatively easy for Boba to pick off the other attackers one by one. Really tough matchup, but at the same time, I hold a lot of the cards with my extra activations and movements, and Figrin can turn off evade for a round - but I probably would have had to settle for a hard fought 2 point win if I hadn't got really lucky with the crit and the failed evade saves.

Round 2: vs Hayden - Cad BH, Assaj, Aurra, Hondo on Cantina
I always play Hayden first or second round at major tournaments..... Hayden was playing a low activation bounty hunter squad with no San Hill or Lobot. He didn't really have anything to keep up with my movement and activation advantage, although I did have an anxious moment when I underestimated Assaj's range when she charged 12 to hit Boba for 60 - she would have killed him with a crit. At that point she was the only attacker standing and had taken some damage, so Evazan would have been able to finish her off (as long as I didn't roll a 1 for initiative).

Round 3: vs Darth Moore - Boba, Mira, Imperial Governor, Thrawn on Jabba's Palace
I don't think Paul was very excited about playing in a mirror match that outactivated him. First round I waited him out, launched my Amanin 18 squares, swapped in Lobot, ran some more, opened 2 doors (finished next to one, then overrode the other open), swapped in Boba, and killed Thrawn. Paul conceded, then argued that my swap was illegal because my Thrawn was locked away in a room. My understanding was that I could use my Mouse Droid positioned outside the locked room to spread my swap CE boardwide (as long as I could count squares), but I was overruled by everyone else, so we started again. (for the record, I was correct - the Mouse is allowed to do that: http://www.bloomilk.com/Forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=9235).

In the confusion of starting again quickly, I accidentally grabbed two of Paul's Rodians, accentuating my activation advantage. Because we played three times altogether (we met again in the semis), this game is kind of blurry to me. I think I ended up tracking down his Boba with mine, and putting 90 on him. He won initiative, and shot my Boba then moved away, but I was able to kill his Boba then get my Boba off to safety. I can't remember what happened after that, but I got a 3 point win. Because of the murky circumstances of my win (although in hindsight, my first win was totally legal), Paul was awarded 1 point in his loss, which ultimately meant that he finished 3rd after Swiss, and was matched with me again in the semis.

Round 4: vs Sharron - Professor Luke's Art Class (with Gha Nachkt) on Jabbas's Palace
Again, I played Sharron twice so I'm having trouble recalling exactly what happened. Sharron was playing Lobot, Marn, and Gha Nachkt, so he could potentially access a 15 Mouse Droid dump. The thing I didn't think through properly was that he didn't actually want to steal my reinforcements with Marn, but wanted to bring in 5 Mouse Droids instead.

This is how it works - Sharron starts with 11 activations, and I start with 13:
(1) Sharron brings in 15 Mouse Droids, I bring in my max of 9 - I use Marn to steal 5 of his Mouse Droids, he keeps his Mouse Droids - it means I get 11 net reinforcements, and he gets 10.

(2) Sharron brings in 15 Mouse Droids, I bring in my max of 9 - we both steal each others reinforcements with Marn, I end up with 11 net reinforcements, and he gets 8.

(3) Sharron brings in 3 acts with Lobot and 5 Mouse Droids with Marn, I bring in my max of 9 - we both keep our reinforcements, I end up with 9 net reinforcements and he ends up with 8.

(4) Sharron brings in 3 acts with Lobot and 5 Mouse Droids with Marn, I bring in 3 activations with Marn and 2 with Lobot (with Momaw) - he ends up with 8 net reinforcements, and I end up with 5.

For some reason, I chose (4).... So if I'd thought about it properly, I could have potentially started the game with 22 activations to 19, which would have made my life much easier.

This was the only game where I lost Boba - I underestimated Jarael's massive range with levitate, Speed 8, a force point, and GMA, and just didn't keep far enough away from his big threats. Luke missed lots of attacks to miss killing Boba, then Boba rolled a 1 and missed out on killing Jarael, before Luke tracked down Boba. I just didn't achieve enough constructive things in the game, and ended up losing convincingly. This was actually a good thing, as it put me in second place after Swiss, which meant that I got to play Darth Moore's Thrawn double swap again in the semis.

I'll write about the other games later.

Semi Final, vs Darth Moore, Boba, Mira, Imperial Governor, Thrawn on Bothan Spynet
I was obviously happy to play Darth Moore for the third time, as I felt like I held all the cards. We started by inching up the board, then I made my big move at the end of the round. I charged up the Amanin, then swapped in Boba. I hit his Amanin, missed his Amanin, then killed Lobot, who was holding the door to the commanders shut. I won initiative, zipped Boba into the commander zone, and killed Mas Amedda, taking away his boardwide swap and effectively ending the contest. Once I killed some more activations, including his Mouse, and Mira, Paul conceded - he had only scored 6 points, so I could have either turtled (I had a huge points lead already and was holding gambit) or gone commander hunting, and he was out of options.

Final, vs Sharron, Art Class with Gha Nachkt, on Cantina
I'm not entirely sure what happened here - with very even activations it was a tight tussle. I was trying to get along the top and kill Dodonna, but I never succeeded - although it did give me some good places to swap Boba to at the end of the game when I was trying to keep him away from Sharron. With my second to last activation at the end of round 1 I swapped Boba in halfway across the board to set up to attack Dodonna at the top of round 2, but I forgot about Jarael's range with Levitation and shockstaff - she hit Boba twice but I made both activation saves (!). Quite possibly unwisely, I abandoned my plans on Dodonna, and killed Jarael in retribution.

It's kind of blurry after that, but I made at least one really bad move when I used Boba at the top of the round to try and shoot an R7, but he missed two of his shots, and it meant Boba was done for the round - I can't really afford not to use Opportunist, unless I have good odds on killing something significant. I tried to position Boba after that shot where neither Luke or Anakin with Ganner could get to him, but I underestimated Luke with Knight Speed and MOTF2. Fortunately, I had an Ugnaught preventing Luke from getting Ataru, but Sharron had Marn in range of the Ugnaught, shot it and missed.

The other key moment was at the end of the game, when Sharron got Anakin Solo within range of Boba with 50 hit points left; Boba made the crucial save. I was able to kill Anakin, establishing a points lead, and then was able to retreat anything worth points out of the way of his attackers, I think the score ended up around 80-40, the low score wasn't surprising given the activation parity at the start.

So I was very lucky on a few counts - with all of his bad luck, it was reminiscent of Sharron's HaweraCon final when he needed anything but a 1 on the final roll to win. I was also lucky to have a squad that could actually keep up with Sharron's - it was a brilliant design, and I think he would have backed himself against any other squad in the tournament. IMO, the NR squad's weakness is its lack of shooters - apart from Anakin, he doesn't have any way of whittling down activations quickly, and it means I can do things like leave Lobot in the open reasonably safely.

Our Save11 group has basically been dominated by the playgroup of Dr Daman, Sharron, Darth Moore, and Mike Moore Smuggler since 2013 - between them, they've won 9 consecutive Majors, and they've also developed some of the strongest squads in the game during that time (Daala variants, Commando Droid Officers with Durge, Imperial double swap). So it was nice to get a tournament win, but it did feel a little hollow, as I needed a lot of luck to get across the line in the final.

you'll always need luck in this game. That's no reason to feel hollow.

To win you need a good squad, a good strategy, good tactics and a healthy dose of luck at the right times.

Congrats on the win!
