So I was talking to my friends about a different style of play, and this is what I ended up with. The old classic sets before things got out of hand, so Rebel Storm through Alliance and Empire, or if desired including The Force Unleashed and Legacy of the Force. I made this call because Knights of the old Republic had some useless pieces then entirely OP pieces. From there IMO things get worse.
So, in this vein, I wanted to see some old classic teams under this format. I hope people even remember the good old days lol. One of my favorite old teams is my 150pt team. Had some good times with it back in the old days of Imperial B&B with classic Thrawn swap. So do me a favor, and share your old favorite team.
--Mavericks 150pt-- 46 Han Solo, Scoundrel 36 Yoda of Dagobah 27 Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight 20 Princess Leia 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Spirit 8 R2-D2 3 Ugnaught Demolitionist

great concept, DLVerjal, thanks for sharing aye, truly that 'golden era' where things seemed very balanced between ranged attacks, melee, and direct damage. TheHutts made some interesting statistical inroads, and a compelling arguement that the gradient between VSET and the entire RS to MotF run of WotC minis, that it was no greater than the gradient at around that juncture you mention (things got ridiculous LotF). VSets are also more 'internally consistent" set to set, with 2 exceptions. I'll leave you to have a squiz at TheHutts and KezzaMachine's reflection. its a good read though I digress; Seps 150 Darth Sid, DlotS San Hill Wat Tambor Human Bodyguard Security Battle Droid x 3 Super Battle Droid x 2 Battle droid x 3? Ugnaught Demolitionist 12-13 Acts, ~153pts (I drop a battle droid if 150 exact is needed hehehe) Preferred reinforcements: Superbattledroids if there's a large gap, Gonk + change in Battle Droids if its early Battledroid sergeant/genosian overseer if some buffs are needed Sniper Battledroid + gonk if they're campers, Bodyguard Droids if I need melee support. Sometimes I shake it up and put a Mystral Shadow Guard. Sid would be GG,DAC if that were an option...

Ah old Sidious. I remember the pawn teams with him and Destroyer Droids...

And the oh-so-dirty Nom Bombs. It's weird to reflect on that as good times now, but blasted if they weren't the best.

I didn't play back then, so I don't really have a squad to contribute. But out of interest, after doing Rolling Mini of the Day etc, I always think of Alliance and Empire as the start of a new era.
The earlier sets have a lot of very dated pieces with a few gems. Alliance and Empire still has plenty of filler, but there are a lot more great pieces that still see play than any earlier set; Princess Leia, Mara Jade Jedi, Storm Commando, Han Solo in Stormtrooper Armor, Wicket, Ewok Hang Glider, Admiral Piett, Imperial Governor Tarkin, Yomin Carr, Advance Agent Officer, Jabba Crime Lord, Obi-Wan Kenobi Jedi Spirit, Imperial Officer (although it's a reprint), Stormtrooper on Repulsor Sled, Chewbacca Enraged Wookiee, maybe a few others, are all worth owning even if you're playing with v-sets.
That's just my perception though - it'd be interesting to see what other people think; I've seen people pump for The Force Unleashed as a powercreep set but I always think there's a lot of dated stuff there and the best pieces are tech (Ozzel, MTB, Amanin Scout). I think most power-creep happened between Universe and the Clone Wars, Alliance and Empire just seems like the first set with a lot of pieces that are still good.
Darth Sid, DlotS isn't the pawn one, right? Clone Strike 36 point Sidious with pawn is still really good.

Yeah, I was just thinking about the original Sidious teams when I saw the seperatist team. And I agree about Alliance and Empire. I included it because it really rounded out most factions without throwing things out of balance.

indeed, I chose the more melee beatstick Sid over "Pawn" sid. Pawn Sid is good too, but for that squad of that era, the idea was a pincer. Keep melee sid on a flank, a couple of moves away from Wat and San. The others flank right, and hopefully you get reserves. San helps you to out-activate most, and you slowly whittle em down. I could switch Darth Sid DlotS for Count Dooku, LotDS, and add another battledroid (or, 1 security battledroid); I find Darth Sid survives longer. @DLVerjal indeed, It is ironic to reflect on NomBomb era as being entertaining, given the consternation at that time. similar with the Boba BH rage back in the day from "Big D" (that's still a thing) or GOWK. Though, NomBombs, Black and Blue, and swap squads were staples of that earlier era. maybe, it is nostalgia making it seem more awesome than it was? If you enjoy that era of game, I wonder how you feel about SW:imperial assault by FFG? i find that game to be like Tannhauser or early SWMinis meets SWRPG lite

A friend is considering getting Imperial Assault, it looks fun but not half as enjoyable as SWM used to be for sure. Anyway, I got into the game at Universe which was a very solid era to play in. It's why I decided to start playing with this format in mind, so none of the insane gamebreaking pieces that completely render an old version obsolete, GOWK, Gen Grievous DAC, etc.
The older sets with their noticeable balanced simplicity allowed you to have multiples of the same character and factor each one equally into the squad building process, because each one had a unique use to bring to table. It's nice being able to make a squad without know I am shooting myself in the foot by using a balanced pieces opposed to the new one with all these bells and whistles. I'm a Rebel guy, favorite faction since I got in, and even I feel dirty after using Riekan lol.
I digress though, I really hope people remember their old squads, I'd like to see some blasts from the past here.
