V-Set 11: Long Time Ago is officially released today, along with its subset, Far Far Away.
(OPENING CRAWL - click begin)

During the design of Long Time Ago, we were aware that it would be the last set designed before The Force Awakens was released. With that in mind, and with the change to the EU, we chose a nostalgia set. The idea was to look at the canon as it existed before the prequels were released. Some of the factions didn't even exist at the time, but for the ones that did more than half of the pieces come from the canon of 1999 or earlier: the original trilogy, Tales of the Jedi comics, the ewok movies, and some of the early EU novels. Some names were inspired by Kenner action figures (e.g. Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)) or Decipher CCG cards (e.g. Brainiac, Son of Skywalker). Far Far Away is really just a part of Long Time Ago where the Tatooine aliens are collected together.

In terms of gameplay, I think three main aspects stand out:

* Shooter defense. There are multiple pieces that have strong defense against shooters but virtually no defense against melee.

* Bonuses for having fewer activations. Odan-Urr, Queen Amanoa, and Son of Skywalker all offer explicit bonuses for being out-activated, which is traditionally a big disadvantage.

* New squad types. While there are plenty of pieces that fit into existing roles and familiar squad types, there are at least five brand new squad types to explore (including 3 new subfactions). Darth Vader of Lothal can pair with one of the Palpatines to form a new type of Imperial squad that doesn't use Daala or Thrawn. Son of Skywalker's Our Last Hope introduces a new twist when facing a squad where he is massively out-activated, and when paired with Lando and Han it encourages squadbuilding with just Rebel-Uniques. Bib Fortuna, Majordomo is the feature piece for a Hutt Cartel squad that utilizes a new movement breaker. Prince Isolder, Hapan Loyalists, and Tenel Ka make up a new Hapan subfaction. The Chiss Ascendancy Commander offers a new movement breaker for a Chiss subfaction squad.

Four questions for everyone about Vset 11.

What piece(s) are you most looking forward to playing?

What piece(s) do you think will have the biggest impact in the competitive game?

What was your biggest want that showed up in the set?

What was your biggest want that didn't show up in the set?

I'll answer my own questions first.

Son of Skywalker and Bib Fortuna, Majordomo. I don't know if either will wind up tier 1, but I think their movement is fun.

Queen Amanoa and Darth Vader of Lothal, for completely different reasons.

Artoo and Threepio. I think the characters should be played together, but the previous pieces never had much synergy together. If this works as intended, Artoo will typically be played with an old C-3PO. And Threepio will be played with an old R2-D2. Only rarely would both new versions be played together.

I still want to see a Hex Droid (fastbreeder).

What piece(s) are you most looking forward to playing?
the new Han Solo. I've wanted a good Han Solo that could cancel init control for a while now. glad we have one now that is good!

What piece(s) do you think will have the biggest impact in the competitive game?
Queen Amanoa since she takes out a lot of the effectiveness of the outactivate and smash squads, which were dominanat last year.

What was your biggest want that showed up in the set?
a Vader that formed the basis of a new playstyle. .
What was your biggest want that didn't show up in the set?
Still would like to see Han Solo's original sidekick Muuurgh in miniatures form. That just me tho. I loved reading about him in the books!

Revan! I love the 100 point pieces and their style of play.
I also think the Chiss/Hutts/Hapans are interesting

What piece(s) do you think will have the biggest impact in the competitive game?
Son of Skywalker and Queen Amanoa as well as potentially the Chiss Fleet Officer in Karrde squads

What was your biggest want that showed up in the set?
Haor Chall Engineer, I'm really tempted to bring a huge team to regionals this year... Haha just hopefully a good map list

What was your biggest want that didn't show up in the set?
A cheap Grievous with prideful for battle droids
I would even take an epic or BHC Grievous too...

Just kidding I always want that

It's definitely ABELOTH! She definitely qualifies as one that fits the theme of the "old canon" and I'm waiting to see a 200 point mini that can hold her own against any squad (I.e. My reserves piece idea) but I'll keep waiting.....

Cool job on be new set though!

I wonder if Revan would make sense with Lando and Dice to get GMA.

I'd probably go Dice, Luke RC, Leia RC, Momaw. Very expensive though.

It's +10dmg and a movement breaker. Seems a lot easier to just go with Talon for about the same thing. I don't know if he can get GMA so easily anywhere else.

Either way a 100 point fringe piece is epic and awesome for the potential options. Bring on more BHC style pieces haha. Grievous, Han, Fett, Jango, Jedis.

I do think she's too expensive to have an impact on the 200 point competitive game. She might come into play in Epics or something.

You really have to have a good target/use for Rebel Conscription for her to be useful. As a combatant she's probably 10 points overcosted.

What are the best Rebel specific CEs?

Princess Leia, Rebel Commando - +10 damage
Princess Leia - cannon shot
Artoo - +2 attack
Chief of State Mon Mothma - +1 a/d
There might be an OK Chiss Trooper squad where he gets Twin, Mobile, and Evade.
