Just for clarification, how does gain work? The way I understand it, "gain" operates differently from "get," in that when a follower "gains" X from commander, even when commander dies, the gained ability remains, versus "gets X," which goes away from Commander dies.
Also, let's say follower gains X from a special ability when within 6 of a character. The follower begins the turn within 6, but by the end of the turn, the follower is farther than 6. Does he still have that gained ability?
Example: Czerka scientist grants Twin to whomever has 10dmg. Stormtrooper is within 6, and has Charging Fire from Admiral Daala. Storm Trooper moves 12, and shoots. The Follower is farther than 6 squares away from the Czerka. Does that follower still have Twin since he/she began within 6 of the Czerka?

In your example, the stormtrooper does not have Twin.
Generally, a character is only handing out abilities as long as it is alive. When it is defeated, the benefit it grants also goes away. There are a few exceptions to this, though. (And quite frankly the exceptions are where the rules for this game get the most wonky.)
* Anything that says "until the end of the skirmish" is retained even if defeated. Yaddle's CE, for example. * Black Sun and a couple abilities like it specifically say the benefit (Grenades in the case of Black Sun) is retained after they are defeated. It's in the glossary - not on the card, unfortunately. * Anything granted by Camaraderie lasts until the end of the skirmish. Again, it's not on the card (but should have been). I forget where that one is clarified, but Camaraderie is the exception to all the other special abilities that give things to allies in that it is for the rest of the skirmish.
But the vast majority of abilities and bonuses handed out by CEs and special abilities go away when the granting character is defeated.
"Gets" is generally used for bonuses. "Gains" is generally used for abilities. They work the same, though.

Okay, thank you for the clarification.
