New sets only come out twice per year, so it doesn't take long to catch up. Here is a summary of the power pieces from the past few sets:
V-Set 10:
A squad with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker is almost completely unshootable.
Yaddle makes an interesting squad with old terrible Jedi, but not competitive.
Aves provides an interesting nerf to boardwide CEs (including swap).
Sabine Wren with Traps, Mines, and Grenades 40 is pretty nasty.
The whole Ghost Crew subfaction (introduced here) didn't start out competitive but took a huge leap forward with the introduction of Ahsoka in set 12.
V-Set 11:
The Defender SA on Covenant Defender and Queen Amanoa give OR and Sith pretty strong shooter defense
XT-6 Droid in OR/Sith is playable 3-point fodder that lets you sacrifice it to get a 3rd activation in a phase
Darth Cognus is pretty strong but needs a force battery.
Warb Null is a tanky Distraction piece, but not really any more tanky than the Juggernaut, so not much meta impact. But a playable piece.
The Rebels got a big boost with ubertech in Artoo and Threepio, and GMA available from Lando, Infiltrator.
Colonel Jacen Solo is a big beat stick in NR.
Bib Fortuna, Majordomo establishes a new Hutt Cartel subfaction. Not a competitive subfaction just based on set 11, but gets a big boost from a couple pieces previewed from set 13.
V-Set 12:
First Order and Resistance subfactions are introduced, but neither are playable competitively after set 12. Both may be after set 13 (previews available in the preview thread).
Arca Jeth is a major movement breaker and Force battery for OR.
Darth Plagueis, the Wise is just about as unshootable as Obi/Anakin, and he also packs a huge offensive punch. Crazy strong piece but no defense whatsoever against lightsabers.
Skyborn Ranger on Uvak is a good Sith scissors piece
As mentioned earlier, Ahsoka boosts Ghost Crew into the competitive scene.
Kyle Katarn, Rebel Hero is just cool. I don't know if he'll be competitive, but he's fun in theory at least.
Killik Drone gives you Satchel Charge and Relay Orders for 5 points. Will be the standard upgrade of an ugnaught whenever you have 2 points leftover in a squad.
Jango Fett, Mandalore is a major power piece. Furious Assault, and can get to 31 defense in cover.
I'm sure I overlooked something important.
