Question 2) unrelated to the first;
If I have a character that has the special ability to give avoid defeat to another character that he is adjacent to and he has the ability himself as well, and if both characters are brought to 0 hp at the same time, due to an area effect, does the avoid defeat happen simultaneous, and they both get to make their avoid defeat saves?
Thanks in advance
Energy Shield, Evade, and Soresu all trigger when the character is hit. The player of a hit character with (or using) any combination of those abilities would determine the order to use them. As they all cancel the damage, you would probably choose Energy Shield first for the chance to (avoid and) send damage back to the attacker.
Bodyguard triggers when the character takes damage (only from attacks), and its use must be declared before any other effect that would mitigate the amount of damage taken (Damage Reduction etc). In other words, if you wish to use Bodyguard, you can't (prevent or) reduce the damage with another ability first.
2)
AoE effects are resolved one character at a time, and the player using the ability determines the order that characters are affected. So if I was using Flamethrower on your characters, I would pick the piece granting AD first, so if it killed him, the other character would no longer have AD when the damage to it is resolved.
Hope that helps - also see Resolving Effects in the FAQ which covers this stuff pretty thoroughly.
