...in the middle of a game now.
Emperor Palpy, Sith Lord, walks closer to Dash to Sith Lightning him. Now it has a range of six squares, and Palpy is not directly in line with Dash, he has to count around a corner. Palpy has counted the first square of his range six from his diagonal square closest to me, putting me in range and thus klling me... but I count it that the first square of the range is a square either horizontal or vertical from Palpy and that the diagonal is a 2nd square putting me 7 squares away and out of range.
HELP! Who is right?!

I believe you are right, you can start on a diagonal, but it will count as 2

Diagonals are 2 squares.

yes.
you count the same way as anything, Diagonal is 2 squares
