Do they work together?
Mara attack is non-melee but LA requires adjacent, but does the type of attack change

All of Mara Jade, Jedi's attacks are considered non-melee, even those generated by lightsaber assault, and thus may benefit from combined fire.

i think that sucks. it says lightsaber assault, so it should be a Lightsaber assault.

It's been that way since Clone Strike (Aurra Sing + Lightsaber Sweep). It's not going to change anytime soon.

yeah another reason why the lightsaber ability should be melee
it works for poison blade, what's the difference?

Poisoned Blade's definition says it counts as a melee attack, Lightsaber's does not.

A lot of people have been saying the same thing since Clone Strike, so I believe we can assume Wizards aren't in any hurry to change it. Besides, changing Lightsaber [insert ability here] to count as a Melee attack screws up far more interactions than could possibly be worth the trouble.

Yup basically the LS special ability just grants the extra +10 damage but there attacks are still considered non melee. You can deflect or reflect etc. a character adjacent to you with the LS Special Ability but you arent able to block, parry etc. Also when using Mara Jedi remember that you have to be adjacent to use LSA fore its a different ability than the lightsaber SA & is worded that its an ability you must be adjacent. Key word Different ability therefore have different deffenitions. So for example if you have a figure like the Jedi Sentinel & you are adjacent to a target, the sentinel would still be able to gain twin attack from a czerka scientist. Poison Blade is a different ability than LS, which is defined as being a melee attack, Lightsaber +x isnt.
