3-player Jabba’s Palace Scenario Options

I tried a 3-player scenario the other day with the following teams and objectives:

Overview: Han Solo in Carbonite is held within Jabba’s palace (Rancor pit map). Rebels entering from the left are trying to rescue Han Solo, Imperials entering from the right are trying to steal Han Solo in Carbonite with a T1 bulk loader droid

Team 1: Jabba. Objective is to stop rebels and imperials from taking/rescuing Han Solo in Carbonite. Team is around 350 points of Boba, Rancor, IG units, lore-appropriate grunts, and an Acklay for fun. Characters begin the game distributed around the map as might be their natural guard positions.

Team 2: Rebels: Rebel characters begin in armored speeder map tile to the left. Objective is to reach Han Solo in Carbonite, unfreeze him, and have him make it back to the speeder. I chose a not particularly strong 200-point team.

Team 3: Imperials: Imperial characters begin in armored truck map tile to the right. Objective is to reach Han solo, bring T-1 adjacent, whereupon it can “grab” Han solo (replaces turn), and carry him away back to the armored truck. I chose 200 points of Vader and some sand troopers.

Outcome: I played as Jabba, and my two friends (relative beginners but pretty quick learners) were imperials and rebels. The game started out with Jabba fighting on two fronts. Rebels initially faired poorly (Leia was eaten by the Rancor), while the imperials managed to kill Boba and the Acklay but lost several sand troopers to a flamethrower beforehand. All sides then converged on Han solo in Carbonite near the center of the map, but the imperials did not heed my warnings to target rebel troopers who were close to freeing Han solo, and instead focused on assassinating Jabba (an objective of questionable strategic value). When Han solo was freed by the weakened rebels, I was not overly concerned until I realized my mistake of giving the rebel team Luke Rebel Commando, who levitated Han Solo well on his way to the Rebel speeder. A chase led by Bossk and the IG units then ensued, who incurred many attacks of opportunity in single-minded pursuit of Solo. The imperials took a break from strangling Jabba to help clear a path for the pursuers. In the last turn, the rebel team consisted only of a 20 HP Han Solo (who had opened the speeder door at the end of his last move) and a faraway rebel trooper, and Bossk and the surviving IG unit had their sights trained on Solo. In a fateful initiative roll, the rebels won 20 v. 19 to allow Han solo to move first into the speeder and end the game.

Has anyone else tried 3-player games?

Hi DarthBainCapital,

That sounds like a really fun game. I have thought about trying something very similar, but instead of being thematic (Jabba vs rebel vs imperials) it would allow the players to create their own 200pt squads with the goal of "capturing the Gonk Droid" and escorting it off the map at their designated location.

Two maps would be put together with each squad setting up an equal distance from the gonk droid. The gonk droid can only be moved when a character is adjacent to the droid and it moves with that character. However, when an enemey character is adjacent to the gonk, movement stops. This will undoubtedly create some chaos with bodies being flung at the objective to sieze the droid. However, there is some interesting tactical nuances that could unfold involving door control and potentially waiting for you opponents to deplete each other before seizing the droid.

Interested to hear your thoughts!

Hi Bobgoog, that does sound like a good scenario too! With multiple players having an incentive to not just hide and let others fight it out is always necessary. I think I've done something similar but the gonk droid is stationary and provides 30 points of reinforcements if only one player is adjacent.

Another really simple scenario is just what I call bounty-hunter style, where you determine who wins by who collects the most bounty (the point-cost of characters you kill). This provides strong incentive for confrontation instead of hiding.

3-player often ends up being: A fights B. Winner of those 2 is weakened so C wins. Thus, turtling is the best strategy and the game isn't fun.

Victory needs to be either based on kill points (that's what Royal Rumble does) or a cycle where A targets B, B targets C, and C targets A. First one to kill your target wins.
