I recently picked up the Clone Wars Starter Set and have had some fun with it, and am now ready to expand. I'm not looking at competitive play, but rather to expand the two squads so that they are competitive against each other.
First of all, I am thinking about picking up the three Map Packs to give us some more options.
Addtionally, my step-son's favorite character is Grievous, so I'd like to add one of his miniatures to the Separatist squad.
I also noticed that one of the characters in the Map Pack, Luminara Unduli, has synergy with Barriss Offee, so I thought I would add that miniature to the Republic side.
Rounding out to 200 Cost and 8 activations for each squad left me with this configuration:
Republic CWSS #1 - General Ob-Wan Kenobi CWSS #2 - Clone Trooper CWSS #3 - Clone Trooper Commander AoT #1 - Anakin Skywalker, Jedi STP #2 - Clone Trooper CCI #1 - Luminara Unduli, Jedi Master CW #6 - Barriss Offee, Jedi Knight CW #10 - Elite Clone Trooper Commander
Separatists CWSS #4 - Count Dooku of Serenno CWSS #5 - Security Battle Droid CWSS #6 - Super Battle Droid Commander AoT #2 - Super Battle Droid STP #1 - Asajj Ventress, Separatist Assassin CCI #2 - Battle Droid CW #26 - General Grievous, Droid Army Commander CS #46 - Security Battle Droid
I believe the "expensive" Grievous gives a much needed boost to the offensive capabilities of the Separatists' Droids, while Obi-Wan and Elite Clone Trooper Commander add defensive capabilities to the Republic squad.
Do you guys think that these squads are well-balanced against each other or is there an obvious advantage to one of the two sides?
I appreciate your feedback.

If you have GGDAC, then I'd drop the "meatbags" and use more droids for the seppies

Your best course of action is clear- buy a case or at least a few boosters of the Clone Wars set- its almost all Seperatist and Republic.

If he's going to buy, maybe we should give Jugular suggestions so he doesn't end up wasting a lot of money. Or just ask if Jugular plans on buying more minis or making due with his collection.

It seems to me that Galaxy at War is also all Republic/Seperatist as well although there would be lot of overlap in the unique characters with what is already here. If you don't already have GGDAC, who is an amazing leader for the droid armies, you may want to save some cash and go for the rare GG Scourge of the Jedi. He cost a few more points and has a less useful command effect but if your step-son want to have GG engage the Jedi he can be a terror. GGSotJ is more of an up-front leader while GGDAC can hang back more. As far as the two squads are concerned I think they look OK agaist each other although I give the edge to the Republic. I don't believe the two Clone Commander's Command Effects will not stack with GOWKs but the big advantage is that the three other heroes in the Republic squad can all benefit from the +4 attack/defense but over on the Seperatist's side only the fodder benefits from command effects.
