Hi everyone hope you all had a good holiday!

I got a clone wars starter set and two booster boxes to start my adventure into the world of SW minis yay!! Love

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind and could help me in the right direction to make a decent squad out of my current figures?

So far i've got;

General Obi-Wan Kenobi (CW)
Clone Trooper (CW)
Clone Trooper Commander (CW)

Count Dooku Of Serenno (CW)
Super Battle Droid Commander (CW)
Security Battle Droid (CW)

Bothan Commando (IA)
Ugnaught Droid Destroyer (IA)
Duros Scout (IA)
Sandtrooper Officer (IA)
Sandtrooper (IA)
Storm Trooper (IA)

Noghri Commando (LOF)
Twi'lek Scout (LOF)
Galactic Alliance Trooper (LOF)
Galatic Alliance Scout (LOF)
Deliah Blue (LOF)
Dug Fringer (LOF)
Trandoshan Mercenary (LOF)

So that is my current SW mini family at the moment, does anyone have any advice or figures i should look out for in future, I will be glad to hear it!

Thank you!

well as far as a DCI game goes, you will never be able to use General Obi Wan Kenobi (he is a banned piece)
but, if you are playing at home, hes a cool house piece.
I try to give advice to new players with squad help and beginning by finding out what was their favorite thing about star wars.
if you liked the clone wars and anything to do with Jedi, maybe Republic is a good choice. they have alot of "beatsticks" (jedi or melee pieces who do significant amounts of damage.)
if you liked the Droids/Seps, try out the Seppies.
I collected and played mostly Fringe when i first started, and as i bought more boosters, i had more factions.
after a few years, i have every faction, and am pleased with all of them.
Mandalorians used to be a power house faction, but they have kind of dwindled since these newer 40 piece sets came out.
Imperials are a great choice, they have an overall flexibility when it comes to commander effects that buff most of yer squad, I.E Thrawn, Palps on Throne, general veers (accurate shot to non unique followers).
Mas Amedda is definitely a piece you will want to invest in, becuase he can rock Imps or republic. he is a must have for both factions, and will run you about 18 dollars.
and check out Ebay, they have stores such as Strikezone Online and Troll and Toad who offer great deals on single minis.
if you want to seriously get into the game, you will want to order some single figs, so you dont have to feel like you are wasting money when you pull something you dont want.. thats not saying you shouldnt by boosters though, becasue you will be surprised how many support pieces you can get out of one box.
Hope that helps a bit.ThumpUp

The one thing I see missing is the rare from your Imperial Entanglement pack. Hopefully it was something good.

I concur with the advice given by Mandalore Da Beast.

As much as I hate the idea of paying say $15 to $25 (or more) for a Very Rare that I want. I would be VERY happy to get it in 1 to 2 packs. As a result, is it really that bad to buy the one I want. Add to that the possibility to get a $2 to $4 rare that you may or may not want and suddenly it isn't worth it. You can build custom boosters for the same price (based on my local prices anyway) and get exactly what you want. With that being said, it was still gratifying to pull a General Whorm Loathsome from a booster that was a Christmas gift.

I like to use the Bloomilk Character rater when choosing which figures to buy. Surprisingly they are not just the most expensive pieces (in fact frequently the expensive ones are only due to scarcity and not performance).

Godd luck with your new vice (er I mean hobby).

A starter and two boosters you say? It seem you are missing the RARE piece from one of your boosters (the IE one at that) which would REALLY upset me as that is where the $$$$ in the booster are found. Find that mini or find out where those booster came from and complain VERY LOUDLY.

As for making a squad you don't really have the pieces to make anything official. Maybe you have enough Fringe pieces that you could field a squad but other than that I see only four or few pieces in five different factions which doesn't lend itself to squad building. It may not be DCI approved but you should start with the starter "heroes" and see what you can get from there.

All sound and very good advice, something I did as I started getting more into the game was to purchase a whole case, Bounty Hunters was my first one. Got a good deal at my local gamestore at the time. Don't know your money situation but if you can afford one, get one, you won't have as much trouble building squads to play some home games. Plus it'll help teach the game to you, your friends, and family. ThumbsUp
Now a days my collection has grown a little I usually buy 5-6 boosters, every week or so, depending on my budget. BigGrin

Hi AMS55, all of the above sounds like good advice. I'm wrapping up probabably my first year in the game, and I now have a very well rounded collection hundreds of dollars. From a money point of view, be advised its much wiser to buy booster "cases" rather than individual boxes. 12 come in a case. I'd recommend you buy a case to get a good foundation and variety, and a few very rares (you should get 4 in a case) in your collection. I personally would recommend the Clone Wars case myself, I'm sure others would disagree. They are heavy with the Seperatist faction (droid shooters) and they have some REALLY good very rares... (General Grievous, Darth Sidious Hologram)

From there I would recommend focusing on building your Fringe collection along with one or two other factions and concentrating your money into those areas. That way you'll have a few really well built factions. Whatever you wanna do though.

In the meantime, build your squad around Count Dooku. Though he's not very acclaimed, he's probably your best bet right now. He's the direct counter to the other guy in your set, General Obi Wan Kenobi. GOWK the best piece in the game (for his cost) but he's also the only banned piece in the game, as someone else noted.

Hi everyone!

You are correct i'm missing a figure! I don't know what happened but Emperor Palpatine On Throne should be on the list! I got him in the Imperial Entanlgements booster box with a picture of Admiral Thrawn on the front cover of the box. ThumbsUp

So are the booster cases like the ones here;

http://www.miniaturemarket.com/booster_cases

I could afford one at the moment except the Galaxy Of War ones for 400 or 800 dollars though, It will be a tough choice of which one to pick because i love so many different era's lol.

Do you guys recommend that instead of buying single boxes or single figures? I was thinking of buying a booster box and trying to get some figures on ebay this week.

As my friend told me if i played Sith or Imperial, to get some mouse droids and Dark Lady from ebay for a Sith Squad. Would that be a good idea?

I don't know which faction to play as though as i like them all, so it does sound wise to get a big collection of figures in one go with plenty to choose form.

It's a shame that Obi Wan is banned! Should i just currently focus on Palpatine on the throne and Count dooku and pick a booster box from an era with the best characters that would go with them?

Thank you everyone for the advice so far!!!

Yup those are the ones, by the way pre-order is the way to go. Your collection will grow in leaps and bounds!!! ThumbsUp I had to slow down on the cases, budget and all that. So now a days I try to buy 5-6 boosters @ a pop, but if you can get cases that's the way to go.

I may have gotten lucky here i'm not sure but if I remember this right, 1 case and maybe 4 boosters and i'm 2 minis from this.

The Clone Wars (38/40); 124 total<------only need 2 more to finish this set!!!

That's if memory serves me right. Confused

Now not everyone is going to have luck like that, and I may have had a booster or 2 I've forgotten about.

I used to have real bad luck with the Universe Set. Crying

Myself I like all the factions too. I haven't gotten into the competitive portion of the game yet but lots of people here have. LOTS of ppl. BigGrin

Myself I like to make scenario squads and have matches at home with my son and brother. We have a really good time.

Here is a link to my Squad thread.

Squelchy's Squad Thread

Check out what other ppl have there to. There is a lot of good stuff in there!!! ThumbsUp

Oh and welcome to your new playground!!! BigGrin

Yeah, cases are the way to go. Whenever I actually want to pony up some money for a set instead of just pre-ordering singles I want, I always and without fail go for a case. I strongly recommend not going for individual boosters. Think; you are putting down 15 bucks for each non-Huge pack. If you pull a mediocre Rare, he might be worth say $3. And you can just take an average and say that the average value of your Commons and Uncommons is 50 cents each. Do the math; for your $15, you are only getting $6 back out; and your Rare might not even be that good. Go for the singles and save yourself that extra cash.

Anyway, the Dark Lady, aka Lumiya, is a cheap and very good figure to have around. Definitely buy her. Mouse Droids are a little spendy for a player as early on as yourself, but you WILL need them later on. If you've got the money though, go for it.

You certainly left a major piece off of your list. It isn't going too far to say that one piece is worth about as much as all the other pieces you have listed put together. I know I recently managed to snag potty palpy for just under $20 which may be a good price but it also took me an eternity to get that piece. He may not be the best piece to take out your opponent but he is definitely a great support piece. Based on your limited collection I'd probably work on building an Imperial squad based around him.

As far as buying goes my thought is cases or singles/non-random lots. With 40 piece sets a case is should only be random in that you get only half of the VR but 1/2/4 of each of the other rarities. I know the majority of my collection has been singles although I usually get them in lots; normally I'd get a complete common and uncommon set from each release and augment that with additional rares and multiples of certain common/uncommon pieces. For IE and JA I decided to get a rare set as well and with GaW finally went for the entire case.

What you collect and what you play are personal decisions. You may have a good start for your Imperial Collection but the others can be fun. Although it may not be so true anymore I'd say the Rebels and New Republic are going to be the most rare heavy factions if you want to field strong squads although that discounts the Old Republic and Sith factions which may not see a lot of play.

Hi everyone ThumbsUp

Thank you for the link to your squad Squelchy, your Leia's Bodyguards team sounds awesome!

I have been playing Count Dooku with some storm troopers protecting Palpatine against my brother, who has been playing Obi Wan with clone troops and some of the alien mercenaries.

It's been awesome like cat and mouse running around the map so far! He tries to pick Palpatine off from the distance and keeps Obi Wan at the back incase i try and swing Dooku round to trap him BigGrin

Hi Mercenary Moose

I looked up Dark Lady on Bloo Milk and she has so many awesome powers but it says she self destructs does that mean she hurts your other characters if they are adjacent as well?

I visited the game store today and was tempted to buy a booster box but managed to avoid it to save money for the case. It's really exciting to open one up and see the figures and read the cards and try and figure out how to put a team together. Drool

I have also been reading alot of the squad ideas on Bloo Milk and then looking up the figures to become more famaliar with hunting for single figures.

Hi DarthJak

WOW seriously thank you so much!!!! That is amazing i can not thank you enough for such a kind offer! Blushing Thank you!!!!!! I will defintely do that. Thank you once again!
ThumbsUp

Hi StevenO

I thought i might get Admiral Thrawn inside when i first saw the box, when opened and i saw Palpatine on the throne was at the very back it was even better to the have the Emperor himself as one of my first miniatures. ThumpUp

Are the Sith and Old Republic not going to see alot of play because the characters are more expensive to play than Jedi other factions? I noticed when looking at some Sith characters they seem more expensive on points. I don't mind though as long as i have fun with them than winning or losing or putting out the best team. Smile

P.S. Can i ask you guys two questions

1. Is Luke Skywalker Legacy Of The Light Side miniature use able as a darkside jedi? His name is pretty obvious lol but i thought maybe because the miniature is Luke when he became clone Palpatines apprentice.

2. Do you guys use your miniatures to play the Star Wars RPG?

Thank you for replying everyone and have a good day ThumbsUp

Your welcome, glad your enjoying playing the game. ThumpUp

We have a lot of fun playing matches at our house, glad to hear you guys are having a great time! That's what the game is all about, good times with friends and family. BigGrin

I'm not sure on the answer to your first question, but I'm sure someone here could answer that one for you.

Second question answer is a big ole yes! ThumbsUp

Hurting your own characters is one of the drawbacks of Self Destruct. If you can get the Dark Lady to blow up on her turn you actually get to hit a big area.

I'd actually suggest getting your hands on the newer Thrawn who shouldn't be too expensive because he is another part of a great Imperial support system.

As for what factions actually see play that will depend on your area. Seeing the spoilers for the upcoming set it may be getting easier to build an inexpensive Sith/OR squad that actually has things going for it.

1. As far as skirmish goes you have you factions set (except Fringe of course) and that sets up Light/Dark. I've always thought that Luke, LotLS represents a Luke sometime between the battle of Yavin and Hoth as he still wields a blaster in addition to his lightsaber; note he is NOT Melee. Now for other, non-official, things you can possibly use him however you like.

2. That is most of the reason I got into SWM to begin with. That is why my early purchases were for lots of cheaper commons/uncommons where I'd only get an occasional rare piece. Getting into skirmishing a little more caused me to go back and fill in a few key gaps in my Rare figures but otherwise I see my RPG hobby driving my SWM purchases more although the skirmish use of the last few sets has been very nice.
