He was. However he is now legal for DCI play, but Soresu Style Mastery has been errated to be against non-melee attacks only. Link: http://www.wizards.com/dci/downloads/SWM_FLR_26Jan10_EN.pdf

No, though slightly modified. I believe his Soresu style blocks only ranged attacks.

It used to be banned in DCI play, but was recently brought back with an errata. the errata being that GOWK's Soresu Style mastery no longer works against melee attacks.

It's technically not an errata though. His stats still remain as printed on the card for casual play. It's just that in DCI play the ability works differently. If it was an actual errata, it would be listed on WOTC's site with the other game errata. Minor difference, I know, but figured it was worth printing out.

Now I know that I'm going to take heat for this, but I heard that the reason they even modified the erratta to remove him from play was because the top three champions of the previous year cried when they could figure out how to beat a GOWK with the same squads they used the year prior. Sort of a ban stemming from their innability to adapt to ingenuity.
But I don't want anyone hating me over that. It's actually something one of the owners of the LGS's I go to was telling me. They said they were there, witnessed it and had dismissed the dissent as whining.
Of course I wouldn't know because I wasn't even playing when GOWK was first banned.

I think the main issue was the fact that he was basically invincible. You could beat him easily sure, if you came prepared, but if not then you faced an uphill struggle.
But hey, a good solution was made, and this is an incredibly dead horse. So it's perhaps best to move on...

See, I haven't even been around long enough to know it was such a sore subject. I started playing a little over a year ago and only casually. I've only been doing tournaments locally for the last three, four months tops. So yeah, I was more or less probing the issue to find out how prejudiced my local gaming store owner is with his perceptions. Sorry I tried to do it at the community's expense. Should have just asked outright.

@ Eric: Don't believe everything you hear. That entire account is just flat out wrong. Nobody whined that he couldn't be beaten, and nobody whined that he could only be beaten by one particular thing. Nobody whined period. Some players who are very involved in the community, and very knowledgeable about the game, and are some of the best competitive players in the world, suggested that his influence on the game was so strong, that it upset the balance established by the game. It wasn't that he was unbeatable. It was that he restricted the meta so tightly, that it was either you play-GOWK or you play a counter squad, and that was pretty much it.
You can spend a month probably just re-reading old threads about the whole thing, and the vicious debates back and forth among various players. Suffice to say that I think most people are quite pleased with the current setup.

I am, GOWK is still a BEAST. Although, I've always wondered how Obi could be so awesome and Anakin the so called "Chosen One" could be so much less. WOTC just loves Obi I guess.
And now I guess I know how much weight of truth the aforementioned person carries. I'll smile and nod from now on.

The decision was made by WotC, not players, after considering advice from a few people, none of whom were possibly the players you mention. So the account is clearly completely off track. And I don't hate you.

Yeah, this is going in a BAD direction, and not rules related.
