I would say the second squad is better, simply because they are all individally pretty good figures, and preventing ranged fire is always a good thing.
In your first build, I would take palp out for an Falican stormtropper commander, bringing up your units to 29/30 defence in cover then take out a stromtrooper to invest in a punchy shooter with palps remaining points. A last thought is to make room for uggies/R7 for overide protection so your not locked out.

Without knowing the theme, I'd currently go with the 2nd squad. I has no damage potential, IMO. The first squad is too fragile against pieces like YoBuck and Lancers (8 pieces can be taken out with one tour). Then again, you do say the first squad is for Demos so I'm guessing you're not trying to be competitive with it.

it's just a 150 point tournament. no theme to it other than that I guess.

Choosing between those two squads I'd have to say the second as well. The first may be fine to use as a demonstration squad where the "feel" is important but after that I don't think it has much going for it.
