So today my fiancee expressed interest in learning how to play SWM. She had gone to a couple of Tournaments with me so she sort of understood how things went. I picked out two 100-point squads, one Rebel and one Imperial. Rebel squad had Luke Jedi, Han in Stormie Armor, and filler, and the Imperial squad had the new Vader, a 501st Clone Commander, and filler. Well we went about our business playing, and at one point my Imperial Knight was based by her Luke Jedi. Luke makes his attack, I decide to block it. Now, I explained Cortosis Gauntlet to her as I was making the Block, but explained it in passing because I didn't think I'd hit it. I roll a 20, and her Luke Jedi is effectively neutralized for the rest of the game. I also ended up rolling a 20 twice for initiative, and also got 2 Crits in the game (she got 2 Crits as well). I just felt really bad for the Cortosis Gauntlet on her Luke!

Ouch! Never use things like Cortosis Gauntlet, Disintegration, Thrawn's swap, Yobuck, Strafe, etc. against a new player, at least not against one you hope will play again. Things like Disintegration or Cortosis can frustrate even reallly experienced players. It's alright to let them play such things, but don't use it against them, at least not the first couple games.

Yeah i didn't intend on trying to use it, and i even offered to ignore the effect, but she wouldn't let me. hopefully she'll still be interested in playing again, lol.

Heck, I'd make up a team for her for the next time using the Imperial Knights. She's had first hand experience of what they're capable of and that +4 AV bonus the knights give each other isn't bad. Some of the knights are even female to boot, which she might think is cool. (Way off on a tangent here, but I keep meaning to get around to painting my own imperial knights different hair colors to give a little variety - mainly so that they don't all look like clones of Ganner Krieg and Sigel Dare, the 2 characters their sculpts are based on. But I'm geeky like that.)

1: Never use such advanced or devastating abilities on a new player. It's okay to let them use those abilities, but don't use them against her. That kind of luckiness combined with thise abilities, or maybe even seperately will make her or any newcomer think "This game is to hard and complicated. I'll never win. There's no point in playing if I always lose."
2: Maybe you two can switch squads and see how that works. She may end up getting lucky and neutralize you, which will likely make her want to play the game more.
PS: You got lucky.

I'm fortunate enough to have a wife who will play occasionally. I admit, I often let her win our games. Not that I lose intentionally, but I usually give her awesome squads, and use something that has little hope against it, or a fun squad I've been wanting to try out. Never win 2 in a row, that's always a mistake

Totally agree! I got my dad and nephew playing. I usually giv ehtme great squads, nothing complicated. And I'll make sure I just have a big beat stick with fillers. in other words, stack the deck in thier favour until you see the lightbulb go on in thier understanding of the game.

I taught my 9yr-old sister to play a little while ago. She smoked my Fringe up with Darth Bane and Exar Kun. Maybe playing 6 Aqualish Warriors and 5 Utapuan Warriors isn't such a good idea..... She can't wait to play again.....
