I'm working on some custom characters, and I'm not sure if I'm costing them appropriately. So I'm curious as to how everyone else does it. Any help would be great.

I try to find some of the more similar pieces and see what they cost for their stats/abilities.
That or I just say "This is too awesome to cost less than 50 points" and just pick a random number. :P

That or I just say "This is too awesome to cost less than 50 points" and just pick a random number. :P That's kind of how I was looking at it. Finding similar pieces. But what was hanging me up is what should certain abilities cost? Like say adding Cunning Attack to a character. So " awesomeness" cost's 50 points? I'll keep that in mind Wooly.

Basically a random guess as to what feels right, then I compare the character to ones with similar abilities, and adjust as needed

Yeah I agree with every one else. It would be very cool if some one made a calculator but that would be highly intense thing to work on. Basically I have two ways. Personal opinion. You have to be fair and just do what you think is right. Second is colleague opinion. Just see what other people think about their cost and so forth. Like if you check this out here its my custom thread. Your biggest tool is criticism !

When costing a custom piece, similar pieces should get you in the ballpark. However, synergies should also be considered.
Self-synergy is relatively easy. For instance, giving a character with Double Attack GMA should not affect the cost as much as a character with Quad Attck.
Squad synergy is often more challenging due to the vast number of synergies possible. Certain abilities or commander effects would be far more powerful in certain factions and this synergy should be reflected in the cost.
Ultimately, its your custom and therefore your call.

Without extensive playtesting, it is all guess work. Comparing similar type figs is helpful, as long as you are aware where they are on the powerscale. New stuff can be particularly tricky.

My friend basically broke the system, and came up with all the point costs for most of the abilities and force powers.
I am working on the calculator = should be great!!

Sounds good, except the designer said there was no set formulae.

I am working on the calculator = should be great!! I actually have an Excel program that gets pretty darn close 95% of the time; anybody know how to post an Excel program? All I see are pic upload abilities on the various forums.

Then you could post the link to your Excel program. That would probably be the way to do it.

I just use the first number that I think of. It usually looks pretty good.
