I tried to make a republic squad with Merumeru and Chewbacca enraged wookie. It looks like savage might be preventing him from being an available choice from Meru's CE, however, according to nickname ( Merumeru Enraged ) this should not be the case.

I had that problem and then realized that Savage characters aren't affected by CEs. However, Merumeru's CE says "Your squad may include Wookiee characters of any faction." This part of the CE doesn't affect characters directly (unlike the second part of the CE that gives the Special Abilities), so regardless of Chewy's Savage, you should still be able to put him in your squad. He just wouldn't benefit from the Special Abilities that Merumeru grants. Good call, adamb0nd.
