My Imperial Knights were fighting a New republic Squad the other day and we came across a strange situation. Mara Jade, Jedi Attacked one of my Knights and I was told I was unable to use Lightsaber Block to stop the attack. I realize the ability does not specifically state that it counts as a melee attack when adjacent and the guy who told me this is a extremely knowledgeble fellow when it comes to this game but I am still clinging to the smallest hope that he's wrong. Cus that really is dumb when I can't use lightsaber block vs a Lightsaber attack.......

Greetings, and welcome to an answer that is argued over almost constantly in SWM.
To be straight forward, you friend is correct. Just because you have the Lightsaber special ability does not mean you make melee attacks when adjacent to enemy figures. The Lightsaber SA only gives +10 damage and let's the character making his/her attacks ignore DR while adjacent.
However, since it is still considered to be a non-melee attack, characters with Lightsaber can benefit from things like the Czerka Scientist's and Verpine Tech's blaster upgrade special abilities. Now, you can house rules that characters with Lightsaber make melee attacks when adjacent, but you have to use the official ruling for tournament play.
Sincerely, Jester007

The deal is, the idea of a "Lightsaber +10" is simply that the character gets +10 dmg when adjacent. They could have called it "Bloomilk +10" and it would be the same thing. It's an abstraction. At the time they made LS +10, they did not have characters who could make both melee and non-melee attacks for simplicity. And while the design team had the opportunity to change it later, they chose not to - likely because the figures with it were costed where it would not work against block and so on. It's hard to change things retroactively like that. Another example would be Aurra Sing from Clone Strike using Lightsaber sweep. These are non-melee attacks, and you can only use block on melee attacks. If it helps, think of these as characters as using both their blasters and lightsabers at once, so that the attack is not really one that could be blocked, as it's not a pure lightsaber attack.

I have a question to tack onto this one, it is similar in a way. Just to be clear a character with lightsaber duelist, say jedi weapon master, gets the bonus when adjacent to a disciple of ragnos but not from general grievous droid army commander even though the first clearly doesn't use a lightsaber and the second does.
Just kinda lame imo that it would be bad against lightsabers in come instances.

Yes, as Lightsaber Duelist is triggered by the opponent having a force rating, not a lightsaber.
As stated above, the game is an abstraction. Trying to apply real-world or Star Wars logic to the game only serves to increase confusion.
