Hi Everybody,

New player with tiny collection here. I'm new to the game with the Target Clearance set. :)

I have a couple of starters (so the kids and myself can play with the toys...), a couple of IE boosters, a TFU booster, and a GAW booster. Also picked up a set of demolitionists on ebay and trying to pick up some common lots off of ebay as well (so stop bidding everybody else! BigGrin ).

So with learning the game I'll be going with the CW starter squads. But building decks/squads is fun for me so I've started to think about the next step. I'll be starting off with Republic/Separatist since that's what I have the most of. Also it's what the kids are really into at the moment.

I'd love some critique on what I've put together and pointers for future direction.

In addition to what I have I'm planning on obtaining the CW map packs, an 07 starter to begin building Rebel/Imperial, and the Endor pack. Also I'm keeping an eye out on ebay & trade forums for lots of commons/uncommons/cheap rares.

So here's what I have:

Here's my Republic Squad:

And my Separatist Squad:

Nothing overly complex (obviously), going with a basic theme, open to suggestions.

Thanks!

thanks for the link correction & feedback Urza, much appreciated!

That's the type of feedback I'm looking for. I picked up the starters a couple of weeks ago so brand new to the game and enjoy learning the nuances.

This is only my 2nd minis game I've been into. First is MonsterPocalypse which I started earlier this year. Now I'm hooked on little pieces of plastic littering my table. Much to my kid's delight and my wife's dismay.

You already have a pretty good Republic squad that you can build. Senate Commandos are very competitive, arguably Tier 1. You'd need Doombot and Mas to be tier 1, but you can still make a really good squad. 200 seems to be the most commonly played format these days.

Here you go:

--Senate Commandos for super_fly--
55 General Obi-Wan Kenobi
47 General Skywalker
29 Captain Argyus
60 Senate Commando x3
9 Ugnaught Demolitionist x3

(200pts. 9 activations)

Ordinarily, you'd only want one of GOWK/GenSky and then add in more activations, but I didn't see enough filler in your collection that seemed worth taking. In this build, without Mas, GOWK would be better than GenSky since it could be tough to keep the Commandos within range of GenSky for Momentum.

By taking both GOWK and GenSky, though, you have 2 good beatsticks with great CEs. All 3 of your Commandos will basically automatically hit with any adjacent attack. +9+4(GOWK)+4(CloseQtrs)+4(Momentum, when active). So +13 for 4 attacks (120dmg max) standing still or +21 for 2 attacks (80dmg max) while charging.

They will also get Close-quarters fighting if they stand still, provided they are near/adjacent (can't exactly remember which it is)....

I reckon FlyingArrow's squad is optimal for your collection.

For your separatist squad, If you want to use Dooku of Serenno, you need to get some cohesive support for him. Some solid shooters or bodyguards tend to work well (or if you get some of the older, rarer pieces, a good force battery like Darth Sidious).

Anyways, I'd look at something like this for a basic 100 point Dooku squad:

Count Dooku of Serenno
IG-86 Assassin Droid/Lando, Dashing Scoundrel/Twi'lek Black Sun Vigo
IG-86 Assassin Droid
R7 Astromech Droid
Ugnaught Demolitionist x2

The trick would be to use override to help keep Dooku protected until it's time to strike, while the ugnaughts blow up other doors and bolster activations to help the shooters get Opportunist.

The two pieces needed to make this squad will sset you back about $3-5 depending on what you get, but they're all pieces that you'll find yourself using quite often.

Thanks everbody, that's fanyasyic feedback. Very helpful.

I hadn't updated the squads yet as most of the stuff listed was just acquired through a few GaW boosters this past weekend. Also have some ebay lots this week - another arguys (won him on ebay then pulled him), droid officer & droids, rep commandos, commando droid capt & comm droids, and some fringe rodians.

I'm not tied to dooku he's just what I have at the moment. Haven't pulled many separatists or fringe. I'd love ggdac (learning the acronyms) and might try to get a gg scourge in the meantime. What do y'all think?

I'll definitely add ig-86 & lando to my list. Had lando on the "to acquire" list already.

Any other sep/fringe to look at that are in the reasonable price range? After going full bore with monsterpocalypse earlier this year my wife has curtailed my toy, err gaming figure, acquisitions somewhat. :)

Plenty.

For Separatist, I'd look for:

Crab Droids (UC, CotF, $1) - They're nice, durable droids that become quite strong when boosted.
Darth Tyranus, Legacy of the Dark Side (R, LotF, $2) - Pretty much the best Tyranus/Dooku as he brings a good amount of offense to the table compared to his other versions.
EG-05 Jedi Hunter Droid (UC, DT, $1) - These things devastate force users just fine on their own, but when boosted, they become a powerhouse
General Grievous, Scourge of the Jedi (R, GaW, $3) - While Grievous, DAC is the best Grievous overall, SotJ is the most friendly on the wallet. He's also the better choice when the followers already have Twin Attack.
IG-100 Magnaguard Artillerist (UC, GaW, $1) - He's got Missiles 30 and can take a hit compared to other artillerists making him quite a problem for Swarm squads.
LR-57 Combat Droid (UC, GaW, $1.50) - If you get Grievous, SotJ, you'll want this guy. The combination of Ambush, Double Attack, and Twin Attack means that you can end a battle before it even starts
Battle Droid Officer (C, MotF, $0.30) - A must have for any droid army. The board wide +4 attack boost is well worth the points.
Asajj Ventress, Separatist Assassin (R, Map Pack 2, $3) - Probably the best all around melee fighter for the Separatists. With the combo of Twin Attack, Rolling Cleave, and Sith Rage, she becomes a nightmare for low HP characters.

For Fringe I'd suggest:

4-LOM (R, RS, $2) - Even after all these years, 4-LOM remains a reliable mini. He doesn't have much for damage output compared to others, but he's cheap and a reliable shot, perfect for chipping away at your opponents.
Quarren Assassin (UC, RS, $0.30) - He's a cheap mobile attacker with good damage output
Boba Fett, Young Mercenary (R, RotS, $2) - While nowhere near as potent as his adult versions, he's still a good choice for some cheap Accurate Shot.
Lobot - (R, UNH, $2) - He has Override and his reinforcements allow you to tailor your squad to the opposition. A very useful mini that still sees a lot of use today.
Rodian Black Sun Vigo (UC, UNH, $0.50) - His CE effectively nullifies Accurate Shot making him a good choice for a Stealth swarm squad that doesn't have access to a superstealth CE.
Aqualish Assassin (C, BH, $0.33) - They're Cheap, they hit hard, and they make a great swarm, especially when paired up with Xizor, Nom Anor, or an Ithorian Commander.
Bith Black Sun Vigo (UC, BH, $0.50) - Another good Stealth protector, but this one can actually fight.
4-LOM, Bounty Hunter (R, BH, $3) - Similar to RS 4-LOM, but he hits harder and can paralyze.
Wicket (R, A&E, $4) - His Traps make him devastating to the enemy, making him an excellent support unit and decoy. Also, because of his high priority in the "Units to kill first" list, he's a great partner to characters with Impulsive abilities.
Caamasi Noble (C, FU, $0.15) - His Diplomat ability allows him to be a hassle for opponents. Primarily used as Gambit scorers, mobile cover, and screweing over Emplacement units.
Human Bodyguard (C, LotF, $0.25) - A basic bodyguard. 11 points for an extra 40 HP is not a bad trade.
Kel-Dor Bounty Hunter (C, LotF, $0.25) - An excellent support unit. His high attack makes him great for whittling down the enemy, and his Self Destruct 40 makes melee characters hate him.
Czerka Scientist (C, KOTOR, $0.25) - Another great support unit, giving Twin Attack and Jolt out to an army can really boost it's effectiveness.
GenoHaradan Assassin (C, KOTOR, $0.25) - His Cloaked allows him to easily blast away at the opponent at range and when they finally close the distance, they'll learn of his master's degree in stabbing.
Jarael (R, KOTOR, $4.50) - Great Melee support. Her combo of Evade and Parry bolster her survival and the combination of Triple attack and Paralysis can stop the opponent's main beatstick in their tracks.
T3-M4 (R, KOTOR, $3) - He has Override and he can set people on fire. Enough said.
Gha Nachkt (R, CW, $2) - He's a must have for any massive droid army because of his Rapport. The Repair 10 is just gravy after that.
Jawa Scavenger (C, IE, $0.33) - Droid hate in a pint-sized can. Just by himself, he can blast a Droid for 50 damage, and he's an Accurate Shooter to boot.
Lobot, Computer Liaison Officer (R, IE, $2) - Another good override support. He trades his adaptivity for Recon and a chance to bring in Reserves.
All Bounty Hunter rares except Boushh from Dark Times (R, DT, $2-3 apiece) - All these guys are excellent pieces who definitely help bolster a starting collection. Bossk is a solid shot who can hold his own against melee, Dengar is the ultimate scrub killer, 4-LOM is a solid 30 damage, IG-88 can tear into a single target or groups with ease, and Zuckuss can root an enemy in place preventing them from retreating or advancing.
R4 Astromech Droid (C, JA, $0.25) - His targeting can lower defense, helping with those critical shots (And it can stack with Wicket's Traps as well for a total of -8 def).
Treadwell Droid (UC, GaW, $0.50) - Same as the R4, but a little more durable and can nullify stealth
Houjix (C, MotF, $0.40) - A bigger, beefier bodyguard that might hit something compared to the other bodyguards.
