So I'm working on revamping the Character Search page, and I wanted to check in with the community about it. There are currently a lot of options you can use to search by:

  • Name
  • Faction (and Fringe)
  • Cost (with range)
  • Set
  • Rarity
  • Base Size
  • Hit Points (with range)
  • Defense (with range)
  • Attack (with range)
  • Damage (with range)
  • Gender
  • Is Commander
  • Has Force Rating
  • Is Unique
  • Is Subject to CEs
  • Has Special Abilities (up to 4)
  • Does Not Have Special Abilities (up to 4)
  • Has Force Powers (up to 2)
  • Does Not Have Force Powers (up to 2)

Whew! Okay, so here are my questions:

  • Which of these do you actually use?
  • Which do you use most often?
  • Are there any you think could be removed because they are unnecessary?
  • Are there any new options you would like added?
  • Do you think there should be a new Google-like search that searches all the text on a card? (If so, should it replace the current search, or be in addition to it?)
  • What do you think about having a few basic search options available, with a toggle to show advanced options if necessary? (If so, what do you think the basic options should be?)

I realize that's a lot of questions. Feel free to answer any of them you have a opinion on, and ignore the rest (or ignore all of them, if you want). I'm just trying to get some community input on this, because I know how *I* use the search, but I don't know how others do.

    Thanks. BlooMilk

I quite like the range of options - it's not like a google search engine, where you want to keep things trim and easy to use - it's a resource for star wars miniature enthusiasts who probably aren't going to be scared off by too much information. The ones I don't really use are gender, and the force powers a character does not have.

The ones I think are most indispensable are faction, point cost, commander, has special abilities, and has force powers.

I added a post a while back, but I miss being able to sort the results of the search by bloomilk ratings. I also wonder if it would be good to search by bloomilk ratings. It might also be good to search by price, as long the price information is up to date - when I started I would have found it very helpful to find all the pieces rated more than 8.3 that cost less than $5.

I would like to see a ranged search for User Ratings (you can use whole numbers in a drop down or allow decimals in a textbox.)

Maybe we could categorize CEs, such as "Grants SA," "Grants Stat Bonus," "Affects character movement," etc. Also, maybe we could search CEs by pieces impacted - "Allies," "Followers," "Followers Within Six Squares," etc.

    Thanks!

I'd like to see an "OR" option for special abilities and force powers. That way I could in one search, search for all characters with either Evade OR Stealth, to be used with my TBSV.

I find most of the options useful at different times, but rarely use more than 3-4 on any given search. Gender, not so useful, but I've found myself wishing for a "species" option for restricted/theme builds on a couple occasions. That's very minor in the grand scheme of things.

I think a full card-text search would be pretty cool, but not as a replacement for what is there now.

  • I've used every single one of them (including the ranges) except gender. If there were an SA/CE that restricted by gender I'd probably use that too.

  • Name, faction, SA, FP (and does not have SA/FP)

  • Not really. I guess gender. "is unique", "is subject to CEs", "is commander" are the ones that would be easiest to live without. You could get rid of the ranges on attack/def/dmg I guess and we could just sort by that value - assuming the sorting came back.

    Quote:

  • Are there any new options you would like added?

  • Bring back the sort on the column headers. A HP per Cost would be a nice column to have - to either sort or search by (or both).

Search by era would be nice. If the dates for all the figures were updated, you could enter a date or range of dates and list only figures that have a date that falls in that range. I haven't messed around at all with era-specific battles, but that search capability might cause me too. A Vassal league might even pop up around the idea. (This might also breathe new life into a bunch of fringe fillers that suddenly are the only options to fill a role in a particular era/faction.)

  • Do you think there should be a new Google-like search that searches all the text on a card? (If so, should it replace the current search, or be in addition to it?)

  • Sounds nice and wouldn't be bad, but the current search is better.

  • Not a good idea unless your profile remembers your preferred toggle mode. I almost always would use advanced search. For basic, I'd say: Name, faction, set.

Put the mini starter sets in a different pull down bar then the 40/60 mini sets

•Are there any new options you would like added?
Not that I can think of at the moment

•Do you think there should be a new Google-like search that searches all the text on a card? (If so, should it replace the current search, or be in addition to it?)
Yes deffinatly add it, no deffinatly dont replace it

•What do you think about having a few basic search options available, with a toggle to show advanced options if necessary? (If so, what do you think the basic options should be?) No real opinion

Let me say on top of this, I make LOTS of customs and refer to existing power and characters tens of times a day so I ALWAYS use it and very much appreciate the function being there.

Actually use:Faction, Cost, Set, rarity, Hit Points with range, Attack with range, Damage with range, defense with range, Has force rating, is subject to CEs, Has special abilities, Has force powers.

Most often: Cost Hit points with range, Attack with range, Defense with range, damage with range, Has special abilities, is subject to CEs, has force powers.

Not necessary: Gender and Maybe base size.

Google search: Yes, an addition to it would be better, I'd have to put some more thought into it though.

Basic search: Not really, but it depends on if you use the google search. If you do use the google search, I wouldn't suggest using it as it wouldn't be used much, but if you don't use the google search idea, I say go ahead.

New options: Maybe have an or feature, like where you can see if a character has either this special ability/force power, or this special ability/force power.

Example: If you search stealth or cloaked with the or feature on, it would show characters with either stealth, or cloaked printed on their stat card, but not necessarily either.

PS: Sorry if the previous explanation was uneeded, I just wanted to make sure you got what I was talking about.

Personally, I think they are all useful, in one way or another, except that "Is Commander" and "Is subject to CEs" is overlapping and the second is more than likely unneccessary.

On the one hand, yes, Savage and Droids are not subject to CEs, and so they would be the difference between the two lists, BUT 1) there really arent that many of those two groups, 2) Each of those groups have CEs that effect them specifically, and Savage has Empathy to get rid of it to make it subject to CEs, 3) I would wager most people would be aware of those groups not normally being subject to CEs and would be able to eliminate it from the list mentally.

Forgot about Force Spirits too, but Im not going to rewrite the above for it, lol.

    So, just a thought.

Also, I agree with swinefeld, I like the idea of a species sorter.

    Very good points.

And so far we're at +3 for adding species to the character data! Cool

"Is subject to CE" seems a bit pointless, with the wide range of types of CEs almost every single character can benefit from some CE (though maybe not a CE within their own faction).

Looks like it's just filters out Droids - which there are plenty of Droid CEs now, Savage, which Exar covers, Force Spirits* and the AT-AT*.

So you can accomplish the same thing by "does not have Droid" and "does not have Savage" (unless your CEs cater to those groups). and ignore the AT-AT and force spirits (though they could be filtered with does not have as well, but there's not many of them anyway)

*Only Force Spirits and AT-AT cannot benefit from any CE which is a mere 5 characters total

I don't see that any need to be taken away as I use most of them as well. But one I would like to see added if possible would be a by Race tab. So if I selected Wookiee it would show me all the Wookiee characters. Or show me all the Rodian and Trandoshan characters. If that is possible. Greedo for example doesn't have Rodian in his name. So if I type Rodian in as a Name search category he doesn't show up. Just a thought. ThumpUp

The Mini Manager has a filter that I use more than you'd think; Living. The calculation is simple, Droids are not Living (Cyborgs are) and Mounted Weapons aren't Living. Everything else is. Beyond that, I wouldn't remove any of the filters you have, it's better to have more functionality than less.

Now that you mention it, I use that one in MM fairly often.
