I was thinking about the game (as I often do), and began to wonder... if DCI rules stated that their were no longer faction boundaries, and tournament play was now done mixing any pieces of any faction together (unique still applies), who do you think the meta would look like?
I was curious if this would put GMLS in tier 1, or if he would still be too pricy, even with so many available commander effects. Do you think our current meta would stay basically the same, and a few pieces would swap out for more efficient options, or would the squads look completely different?
I know there's no way to prove any of this, but i'd just like to hear some theory.

ok here's my first try at this.
--Factionless Meta-- 45 Mara Jade, Jedi 32 Thrawn (Mitth'raw'nuruodo) 27 Lobot 27 Luke Skywalker, Rebel Commando 25 Leia Skywalker, Jedi Knight 14 General Rieekan 12 Gha Nachkt 9 General Dodonna 8 Mas Amedda
(199pts. 9 activations)
Bring in 10 mice for 19 acts. All have double evade and Luke and Mara have Cunning and Opportunist.

Try playing some Dream Team format games. You'll see some wicked combinations come out.
Expanding on the Yobuck theme Mandelmauler mentioned, what about having Cunning available along with Opportunist, and Pawning with Sidious?
Rieeken or General Wedge would be on every team.
I think that we'd see a couple/few wildly abusive combos become the choice. We'd be back at the GOWK debacle.
Don't get me wrong. Dream Team games are a lot of fun and we do them periodically as part of our league play. But I wouldn't want to see that become the DCI norm.

I would expect R2 Astromech, Dodonna and Rieeken to be common in most squads. Thrawn and Mas would get a lot of use as well, and then after that, it comes down to the prefered beats but at the top of that list: Jedi Exile, GMLS, Mara Jade Jedi, Lord Vader, YoBuck, General Skywalker just to name a few.

A 200 point Skybuck with Whorm, Dodonna, and Rieekan would probably blitz any opponent who didn't have disruptive.

I imagine disruptive would become far more popular out of necessity

GMLS would actually fall farther away from tier 1 in a metaless world - as would roughly 2/3 of all currently competitive pieces and squads.
The meta would devolve into basically: Yodabuck Whorm Mas Dodonna and Whatever else
vs Yodabuck Thrawn Mas Dodonna and whatever else
Most other things would be eliminated from competitive play. There would be little point in playing in that meta. What people enjoy in terms of playing "Dream Team" on occasion is that they are looking for "God Combos" not necessarily identifying and executing the top tier of that meta. As soon as you make something like this the competitive format, the game goes in the tank. Faction limitations are overall a very strong aspect of the game (whether you didn't like how WotC handled the lesser factions or thought it was about right).

I am curious. Is our current meta locked? Until the v-sets are released, are we not going to see any change in meta?

I think the current meta is about as open as it has ever been. Yes, the top factions are still on the top, but there is a wider variety of squads than the past couple years.

I think kyle katarn, combat instructor would become top tier. Disruptive, + the ability to either double block or riposte on kybuck/lancers. I think that as commander effects made pieces near indestructible, this sort of counter would be mandatory.

I agree with Bill's suggestion og GMLS falling further from T1 than he is now, but I also agree with Adam about Kyle, though I dont think it would be just limited to that one piece. Anything wtih Disruptive would become much more valuable than it is now, and Depending on what all could be put with it in what combination, I think you might see a falling off of the Kybuck. not neccessarily as a return to swarm squads dominating, or massive activations to wait out your opponent, but if Yoda comes strafing around my KKCI whos got Opportunist from Thrawn and Twin from Whorm, Yoda better hope hes near full on hp, can spend a fp on block, or might just want to rethink where he is gonna move by.
However, with the fall of kybuck, I think youd see the further rise of AniStap. The Lancer I think would be relatively uneffected though as it being a droid means alot of CEs wont help it from other factions, and it can bypass the Opp-Quad Riposting Kyle problem.

Would huges be anymore likely to come into play? The basalisk droid might be an actual threat with twin and swap. What about any of the other ones? Or, would they, like GMLS, just fall further and further from tier 1? A good portion of huges are droids, and so would become no more playable in this format i'm sure.
