Ok, so I have a quick question. I'm making a dejarik board for my brother for Christmas and I don't know what kind of dice to include.

http://www.smithohio.com/dejarik/dejarik_rules.pdf

and

http://dhost.info/rissa/Holochess/index.htm

are my sources for rules, but I wonder about the dice terminology. Can I just use a normal 6 sided die?

A d6 is a standard 6 sided die. We use a d20, or 20 sided die, for SWM.

I found the bit on the reference instructions saying that "each player rolls the number of d6 dice that corresponds with the attack or defense rating and adds the numbers together"... so I guess I need at least 8 dice per player? I guess my brain is defaulting to SWM rules where I'd add the dice roll to the Attack/Defense rating. Seems like an awful lot of dice to use though....

You're reading it correctly, each player would need up to eight d6 using those base rules.

Although, you may want to try playing with just rolling 1 D20 and adding the stats to the result. This is still pretty fair and leads to a much faster game. (and a LOT less dice to lose) BlooMilk

Yeah, the D20 would be a good consideration I guess. I still think it would be fun to go with the D6s though. I've assembled the pieces, printed and laminated the boards and I'm going to try finding a good item to mount the 14" boards on. Suggestions? Has anybody else made a gameboard version of this yet (with pictures?).

You could just do 3d6 and add the combat value though that's not really markedly different from using a d20. I prefer the original rules. I bought a box of red and a box of blue dice from my LGS for this.

squid89 (Bob) posted his custom board on the general forum a while ago. Search for dejarik should turn it up.

I have one, but I've never posted pics of it. It's a radically different idea from Bob's.

I switched to the (1) d20 due to only wanting to lug so much stuff around with the minis. Not that a few more die add too much, but it's just a few more things to keep track of.

Now...if you were to have your own Dejarik board that held the die, that would be a different story.

NickName, care to share the pics? I threw around some ideas for a folding acrylic board that would be easy to transport, but never got the design quite right. Maybe I'll give it more thought over Christmas break. I am trying to make it cost effective to mass produce just in case there is a demand for them in the long run. (non-profit of course) Wink

veered pretty far off topic, but here's a pic...

I went with more of a "royal" look than the Millenium Falcon look.

The whites were printed onto label paper using a Photoshop drawn template, hand cut, and stuck on a 14" acrylic circle. A second acrylic circle is on the top, sandwich style. The base to raise it a quarter inch off the table is like 4 inch circle or so.

Very spiffy set up Jason. Did you make the cards yourself? Also are the pillow beads on the edge just for decoration or do they have gameplay signifigance?

Very cool gameboard! I printed up the board on card stock, laminated it and put a foam backing on it too. Not as classy, but it looks nice.
Too bad I haven't made one for myself yet. I think mine will be more like yours though.

For mounting, foam-core board is pretty good to use. It's pretty cheap and cuts nicely with a shapr utility knife. Don't slice all the way through in one cut, use multiple passes to avoid tearing the foam center and getting rough edges. For the cut edges, I like to slice cardstock into 1/4" strips and hot glue along the foam-exposed edges for a more finished look. The foam-core comes in black or white (check hobby stores or office supply). I printed a copy of the gray and blue tinted boards and mounted one on either side of foam-core for a "flip" board depending on what mood I'm in to play. It travels pretty well - if you really need to, you can score the underside (and reinforce with tape) and it would fold up for travel. Might end up with a creased loo down the center though. The big board I made is a little less travel friendly.

For the dice, you can pick up some of the smaller sized six-sided (d6) in red and blue for fun. The 12mm size comes in blocks of 36 - plenty for Dejarik and you can use the extras as counters for the minis game.

Curious to hear how your games come out and which rules set you end up using as well.

I made the cards, but they're just a quick photoshop job of the backs of WotC cards to replace the faction logo with the Dejarik stat block.

The beads mark the starting spaces for each player, like the lights on the traditional falcon style board. Depending on the rules being used, they may be a safe zone.

I like the cards too. I included the original cards for the two boards I am making. I also used foam sheets as a base and attached them with glue dots I found at a local craft shop. I'll photograph the end result and post. I just picked up a couple of scrapbook boxes to hold the sets in, though they are an inch short as I figured they would be so the boards are flexible. I also have downloaded both the star wars font and the aurbesh alphabet for box labels.

Oh yeah, my daughter says sharing is caring if you want to post your card templates! Also, my wife suggested the foamcore as well, but I've worked with it before and found it not very durable and marks or dents easily. Craft foam cuts easily, glues better than felt and is flexible but not as thick.

After uploading it takes you to a page of obscure looking links to choose from. Find the one that says something like "link for forums" and copy/paste that into your post here.

Grrrr, Bene smash puny think machine! Can't do pictures! Too hard to use imageshack... Maybe I can get my tech department (i.e. My wife) to figure it out.

You might try watching a YouTube tutorial.

This one's by a German guy, but it's about as succinct as it gets for what you want to do.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4nep80zHYI&feature=related

Imageshack has updated the look of their site a bit, but the buttons and selections are all basically the same for the 2-3 things you actually need to do.

Once you've done the same thing as in the tutorial with your own picture, you just come to Bloo write a post and Paste in the code where you want the picture to appear in your message.
