If you were to rank the Star Wars films, what order would you rank them in and why?

Here's mine:

1. The Empire Strikes Back - I think it's the greatest sequal of all time. IMO it surpassed EpIV in every way, and that's no small thing. This film scared me when I was a kid.

2. A New Hope - Without a doubt the most important movie of all time, it of course reinvented cinema.

3. Revenge of the Sith - The first hour is clunky, but the second haalf is truly amazing. Truly gripping watching it all come together. Of course the awesome Lightsaber fights help!

4. Return of the Jedi - This one is funny. I think the parts with Vader, Luke and Palps are the best scenes in the whole saga, but the film is very inconsistant. I hate Ewoks.

5. The Phantom Menace - A lot like ROTJ to me. It has some awful stuff; Jar Jar, kid Vader and way too many meetings. But there are spectacular parts too, like the big lightsaber fight and the podrace, 2 of the highlights of the saga.

6. Attack of the Clones - This is the one I have the most trouble with. The writing is terrible in tthe 'love scenes'. I do love many parts of the film, like the Arena battle, the start of the war and the cool LS duels. I always skips half the movie, it's the only one I do that with.

So what about you?

The darth maul obi gui gon is the best part of the whole series
The cartoon movie does not count as a movie?

4 and 6 better than 5, bacause of sceens with large group of alians and tuskan raiders, jabba the hut and ewoks singing.

1. A New Hope - Self-contained story of saving the universe, complete with magic, a princess, an old wizard, and an evil Lord. I saw it enough times at a young age that it's not 'bad acting' but just 'the way people talk in that universe.'

2. Return of the Jedi - I was 7 when it came out. Go ewoks!

3. Empire Strikes Back - I know it's everyone else's favorite, but I wasn't as excited about Hoth or Dagobah.

4. Revenge of the Sith

5. Attack of the Clones - I was looking forward to Yoda's first lightsaber for at least a decade.

6. The Phantom Menace - Podracing. Ugh. Stretch a topic that should have been 3 minutes into 20. Or was it more? The only thing worse was the love scenes from EpII. The podraces were such a waste of time that this landed down here even though Jar Jar didn't even bother me.

I pretty much agree with Sashlon, although I've only seen Revenge of the Sith once (!), so I don't have a firm opinion of it.

I think that Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope are way ahead of the other four. Empire Strikes Back has a much darker, more mature tone than the others, while A New Hope is fast paced and exciting.

I love the Tatooine stuff at the start of Return of the Jedi - it's almost my favorite part of the entire films. Aside from the Ewoks, the things that detract from the movie for me are the awkward attempts to add emotion - such as the Rancor keeper crying, and Mon Mothma's really awkward "Many Bothans died to bring us this information" line.

If they'd taken out or toned down Jar Jar, and fixed a few of little Anakin's lines ("this is intense!"), I think Phantom Menace could have been very strong. Same with Attack of the Clones and the hyper-awkward love scenes. Lucas had a wife who helped with the script in the first two movies, right? He probably should have kept her on board....

1. Empire Strikes Back - Best soundtrack of all the films. It is just a fantastic film.

2. A New Hope - Just cos it is the original, and started all this.

3. Revenge of the Sith - As Sashlon says, it is actually pretty intense in the last half.

4. Return of the Jedi - I dislike ewoks intensely. I don't like that it is killing another deathstar.

5. Phantom Menace - After watching this recently, I realised it isn't as bad as I thought.

6. Attack of the Clones - It is ok, but the film I watch the least. I hate the love scenes. I find the relationship too forced.

Empire Strikes Back - One of the very few examples that the sequel surpasses the original, and under Kershner's direction, it brought us a few adult themes that really solidified the franchise for future glory.

A New Hope - A fun western in space version of Hidden Fortress that gives us some very memorable and enjoyable characters, including introducing us to arguably the best bad guy in filmdom.

Return of the Jedi - Ewoks take this film down a notch. Rick McCullum, it's rumored, convinced George to change it from Wookiees in order to secure a larger demographic, the beginning of the decline from semi-serious themes, to Dark Crystal esque, borderline kids films.

Phantom Menace - While it had Jar Jar, it also had the Qui Gon/Obi Wan versus Darth Maul light saber scene. The dialog was cheesy at times, but only a prequel (ha) of the cheesiness that would follow.

Attack of the Clones - It is a fight between this one and Revenge of the Sith for last place. The "I deeply, truly, undeniably, irrecoverably love you" bit from Natalie Portman was as cringe worthy as anything I had ever seen. Things that saved it are the Obi Wan vesus Jango Fett fight, and some of the Clone battles.

Revenge of the Sith - I probably should rate this above AoTC, but I found this whole movie a culmination of the three movie's deconstruction of the character we all loved, Darth Vader, into the ultimate Emo kid. The final lightsaber scene was anti-climactic, and its attempt to be the pinnacle of lightsaber fights rendered it like a Michael Bay movie, or a piece of anime.

1. Empire Strikes Back: Not my favorite, but the dark, serious tone, Hoth Battle, Yoda, Cloud City, and Soundtrack make it the best one in my view.

2. Return of the Jedi: My favorite, Luke a Jedi Knight, Emperor Palpatine on the Throne, last duel, brings everying together to one climatic end. First movie I ever remember seeing in the theater.

3. A New Hope: The one that started it all, but not as good as the other OT films in my view.

4. The Phantom Menace: Starts everything, didn't mind Jar Jar, kid Annie, loved the return to Tatooine, and the duel at the end is the best of the whole saga. More importantly, it didn't really mess with the story arc all that much.

5. Revenge of the Sith: Decent ending to the prequels, but Anakin's fall was too forced and too quick for me, and lucas left too many plot holes.

6. Attack of the Clones: For one reason, the love story between Anakin and Padme was too forced, happend too quickly. She went from "ew...he's a creep to I've always loved you in a span of 20 minutes.

To me the most important aspect of the saga is the story, and EII and EIII drop the ball on the most crucial story aspects of the entire saga...Anakins forbidden love with Padme and the birth of the twins and his fall to the darkside. Both should have had more time on screen and a slower more deliberate treatment.

Overall, the OT was better executed but the PT has many more interesting things in it albeit poorly executed. My opinion of course.

1. VI
2. V
3. IV
4. III
5. II
6. I

Pretty easy! Just reverse the order and you've got my favorites in order, lol.

For Me:
1. Empire:
2. Return of the Jedi: The 1st one I was old enough to remember vividly seeing in the Theaters.
3. Revenge of the Sith: Tied up the Pt well in my eyes
4. ANH: Love it!!
5. Ep 2 ,
6. The phantom Menace

For me, the difference between 1-4 is not that great. I love them all including the 1st 2 of the PT. ThumbsUp

1. Empire-Who didn't play the Battle of Hoth in the snow as a kid?

2. Return of the Jedi-Ewok's aren't that bad! 3 Great battles at once and Slave Leia!

3. A new hope-A great start!

4. Attack of the clones-Geonosis arena was the shizz. I wish my girl would hug me if I killed some sand babies.

5. Revenge of the Sith-Anakin turn a little fast for my tastes.

6. Phantom-Could Shmi and Anakin have lived in a double wide since he loved racing so much? The best part of Jar-Jar is the rules questions he generates.
