The question was asked, and I've been wondering too, so I did some research to satisfy my inner-geek If I've made any mistakes, please correct me. 2005 (100) stsparks72 -Dura Strike- 39 Durge 37 Aurra Sing 11 Aqualish Spy 07 Twi'lek Scoundrel 06 Ithorian Scout 2006 (150) engineer --old school B&B 2006 champ-- 75 Darth Vader, Jedi Hunter 37 Grand Admiral Thrawn 8 Mas Amedda 8 Probe Droid 16 Gran Raider x4 6 Ugnaught Demolitionist x2 2007 (150) Dr_Divot Broken Boba AE (150) 62 Boba Fett, Bounty Hunter 09 R2-D2, Astromech Droid 52 Jedi Weapon Master (x2) 08 Wicket 09 Ugnaught Demolitionist (x3) 09 Ewok (x3) 2008 (150) billiv15 --Speedy Cannon-- 46 Han Solo, Scoundrel 45 Luke's Snowspeeder 20 Princess Leia 11 Human Bodyguard 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Spirit 8 R2-D2 12 Ugnaught Demolitionist x4 2009 (150) Fingersandteeth --lobbin' luke-- 27 Han Solo, Smuggler 27 Luke Skywalker, Rebel Commando 20 Princess Leia 16 Elite Rebel Commando 16 General Crix Madine 14 General Rieekan 9 General Dodonna 9 R2-D2 with Extended Sensor 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Spirit 3 Ugnaught Demolitionist 2010 (200) Echo24 --Smug Commandos (2010 Gencon Champion Squad)-- 27 Han Solo, Smuggler 27 Lobot 27 Luke Skywalker, Rebel Commando 20 Princess Leia 32 Elite Rebel Commando x2 16 General Crix Madine 14 General Rieekan 12 Gha Nachkt 9 General Dodonna 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Spirit 8 Mouse Droid x4 + 20 points of Lobot reinforcements

Thank you very much! Is there any reason that these squads were so successful?

Map choices combined with the squad choices also had an effect. Otherwise, there isn't a lot of consistency to the winning squads, unless you go very general like, "powerful CEs" or "lots of undercosted minis" or some such. Some have range, some have power, some were more defensive, etc. And of course, let's not forget the luck factor.

If you do not mind sharing, could you go through the thought process behind your squad that won? Like why you included the characters you did, the maps you prefered, the squads you didn't want to see face you, the squads you did. I would just like to gain some knowledge about the competetive thinking. I have never done a competition so I have no experience with the thought processes.

jlbm347 wrote:Thank you very much! Is there any reason that these squads were so successful? Well, you got to look at the time-frame in which these squads won. Until LotF came out, there was really no one with GMA. San Hill was the only decent tempo control for a long time but only for Seps; who didn't have Lancers, IG-86s or GGDAC until late in the game's life. Dodonna also didn't come out till LotF, Panaka in KotOR, etc. For the 2006 winner, Grand Admiral Thrawn was the only commander with a swap in the entire game. Couple that with Vader, JH (who was a beast back then) and you have a tough build. 2007 had Boba, BH with R2 Doombot and two JWMs (which are still good in today's game). Boba was a real tough SOB back then. Didn't have to worry about Cloaked (wasn't made yet) or super stealth all that much (only Vong and Rebel commandos could do it) at the time. 2008 took advantage of a couple of strong Rebel shooters with Twin and Princess Leia's CE. At the time, not that many figures had Evade, so that squad had a lot of damage potential with little to no way to stop it. Also, Luke's SS being able to Mobile out really far made it difficult to protective vunerable pieces. 2009 and 2010 winners had similar success due to the Rebels having been given access to tempo control (Dodonna), surviability (Rieekan and Crix's Disruptive), lots of damage output between Han and the Commandos, and then Luke's Levitate. You also have to remember that having a good squad is just part of the game. I've had many games won & lost because of a gamble that didn't pat off or a misplay that was taken advantage of. Most of the people that make the top 8 are the ones who spend a lot of time practicing with a chosen squad to minimize the chance of a mistake and to really understand the strengths/weakeness of it. Sincerely, Jester007

The game changes so much from year to year, my comments would be totally out of date. Even look at last years winning squad: 2010 (200) Echo24 --Smug Commandos (2010 Gencon Champion Squad)-- 27 Han Solo, Smuggler 27 Lobot 27 Luke Skywalker, Rebel Commando 20 Princess Leia 32 Elite Rebel Commando x2 16 General Crix Madine 14 General Rieekan 12 Gha Nachkt 9 General Dodonna 8 Obi-Wan Kenobi, Jedi Spirit 8 Mouse Droid x4 + 20 points of Lobot reinforcements What happens is this player goes up against a 200 Vong squad with a Yammosk? Which commander effect to select? That game would hurt. Look at all the new maps this year. It's a balanced set. Do you want to go all non-melee or a few melee attackers along also?

Nice summary Jester but you forgot about Barcara in the 2007 write up. Not that he was ever really a game changer.

It will be very interesting, however, to see what shows up @ GENCON this year. I imagine there will be a much greater showing of Vong, OR, and Sith this year. For OR, they will mostly be Bastilla squads. Sith will have lots of Bandons and/or Revans and the Vong of course will have the Yammosks. Now as to say who's gonna win it......I'm not going to make a decision until after Regionals is done. Sincerely, Jester007
