Yobuck Swap vs New Republic Options

We had a big local tournament in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, over the weekend. Overall I did OK, but I had three games against two strong New Republic players over the weekend. I lost all three, and I'm struggling to see how it's possible to win against them.

I used Weeks' Ki-Blast squad, with:
Yoda on Kybuck
Ki-Adi-Mundi, JM
Captain Rex
Ferus Olin
Captain Panaka
Doombot
Mas
15 points of Rodian Brutes and Uggies

While there are other Yobuck swap squad options, I think this is one of the best ones out there with the flexibility it provides. (One guy keeps telling me to use a Master Kota swap squad, but surely that's a couple of years behind the times?)

The two New Republic squads I played against had:
Mara, Ganner, Anakin Solo, Dodonna
And then one had Kol and Wedge (I played this one twice), and the other had Katarn JBM and Kyp Durron.

Is it just a bad matchup for an otherwise good squad? How do you give yourself a chance? The way I see it:
- The pieces you want to get rid of first are Dodonna, Anakin, and the little activations. Maybe Wedge too.
- The other player can just stick Dodonna in a room, and it's pretty hard to out-activate the other squad without killing him, even if I take out all the little guys.
- With block and evade, Anakin can be hard to get rid of. If you hit him with Yobuck, he has a 50% chance of blocking it. If you swap in another attacker after Yobuck, Mara will probably be waiting to pulverise them.
- You only have limited time to get Anakin before Mara Jade gets into your back end and starts hitting things?
- You really need to keep Rex super-safe to have a chance of closing later - it's pretty hard to take down big melee pieces like Kol and Kyle Katarn without him.
- On the positive side, Ki-Adi-Mundi's Anticipation can be very helpful against Mara.

Does anyone have advice on how to go about this matchup? We had a tournament in the weekend, and out of the four players who I find hardest to beat, two ran New Republic (the other two played Seperatist and Vong). Maybe in our current local meta, I should be looking at playing another faction.

Switch out Ki for General Skywalker, and Rex for Dash. Ferus should be replaced by Lobot. Skybuck has above average odds against the NR.

General Strategy Points.
Use momentum hits to up the damage with Yoda. If an unactivated Mara is near Yoda at the end of a run, leave him there for the next phase. If your opponent uses Ganner/Mara to attack, they aren't going to come close to killing Yoda. Then, swap in Dash afterwards, take the AoO and try to kill Mara. If they don't attack, you swap in a free Rodian Brute and hide for the rest of the round. Repeat a second time, and Yoda has probably done enough to finish the pieces. Generally, you want to use yoda to soften tougher targets, not just kill activations. Make sure you are hitting the Maras and Ganners particularly when you can get away for free (no disruptive). Anakin needs to die early, but just pay attention to his range after you kill a force user and you will be fine.

Specific strategy against Kyle - In and out attacks, take the AoO on Kyle and move out of disruptive, for an immediate swap out in one phase, until Kyle is close to dying. Hit anything not protected by disruptive and force your opponent to move everyone at once in one bubble - that keeps them packed in for easy yoda hits, and makes them predictable. Take out door control first whenever you get the chance to do so easily.

In all matchups, you've got the targets generally backwards. Dodonna and Wedge aren't priority. Their attackers and door control are primary. That's probably your biggest issue. Wasting time trying to track down D and W is simply letting your opponent get Mara/Ganner into position. Mara is not hard to kill with Skybuck. You usually need 1-2 hits with Yoda on her, and Dash can finish her with ease. Anakin is a good finisher as well, but against the NR, Yoda and Dash are used first. Anakin should move up on his own however, as he can often get a backdoor 10 square momentum double off that can finish a key piece, even with disruptive. Against Han GH, this is usually my tactic. Get 20 with yoda on him, finish with Skywalker.

Bodyguard. You have it so use it. As long as they don't have accurate panaka should be with Rex. Kill activations and get some damage on the attackers with yoda till they are weak enough to swap in Rex or ferus for the kill. You should keep one of your attackers on r2 at all times as well. Just practice a lot with it and learn your maps. Kyle can be tough to handle but practice makes perfect.

KiBuck works great, it's a matter of positioning for this squad. I ran it yesterday and went 2-1 losing only to David and you can ask anyone I always lose to him anyways. It's about surgical strikes, and I prefer it to Skybuck royally. The key is in how you use the Yobuck on strikes. Avoiding disruptive isn't as hard as it seems. Ki is great for dropping in and doing sweep damage on something I used that tactic 4 or 5 times yesterday killing several of my opponents key pieces. Keep a brute on R2 so that when u swap back you'll still be on him for the next turn. It's harder vs. Evading NR because Rex won't hit as much, but when you see non-evading NR it tends to work better.

Bill covered most of what I was going to write, but the important bit is your priority target in a typical NR squad is Mara. There's a one quad attack max for her. If you fail to prevent more, you're in trouble. So you prioritize killing her. You bring in your Kybuck to put the initial hit. If it does enough, you swap in your finisher that will almost alway be a winning trade for Mara when takes one for the team. If Kybuck doesn't do much (say, a successful Block) you swap in a scrub.

Disruptive squads will require a bit more care if they prevent Kybuck from getting away easily enough, but I'm not all that averse to letting Mara get in her attacks on Kybuck in a non-Cunning situation if there's not much danger beyond that. You generally have to close the whole squad closer before engaging in such cases rather than letting Kybuck run wild on round 1 or 2.

Thanks for all the advice - there are two different approaches right? Skybuck is best suited for charging in and destroying things, and Ki-Blast is good if you want a lighter touch?

To clarify, normally I like to try and get tempo control in games - take out some small pieces, and get control. But obviously I need to rethink against New Republic, since it is hard to get to Dodonna (I didn't even try the other night, it's just what I would do if a bad player let me). I do find it hard to want to sacrifice Rex for Mara, if there's a Kol in the squad - I know that it's a good trade otherwise. In one game I took down Anakin and Mara, but I found it very hard to close down Kol with Ki-Adi-Mundi and Ferus - you really need a shooter against him, with his defence of 25, Lightsaber Block, and MOTF2.

I did completely forget about Ki-Adi-Mundi's Lightsaber Sweep too. Thanks for the reminder!

Well, Hutts, even though you made the Final of said tournament and now rank #1 here in our points system - kudos for wanting to get better! You may think that everyone was wanting Sharron to win, but KFC, Bev and I were rooting for you... we were just too tired to be all that vocal. (Someone has to take the Sheild(s) off that punk!) Go Hutts for your last Save11 Championship game next week! (Sorry, Sharron...)

Anyhoo, Bill and SWMgamers crew - after your advice regarding Slow Play and the great SHNN episode that had a chunk of it dedicated to our plight down here, I sent emails all around our local group with links to the gamers page and the SHNN .mp3 with instructions to study it prior to our day-long LowerHuttaCon2011 (the local Tournament that Hutts mentioned in post#1) and I am proud to annouce that of the 41 games played, 21 of them were finished in time - and the Top 8 players had 21 completed games (within time) in their 30 games! That is 70% completion from our Top 8! Congrats to all our Save11 folk!
