I was looking through NR peices (which I have recently become fond of) and noticed that Mara Jade Jedi was rated 8.39 and Mara Jade Skywalker was rated 6.79....why is this? I think that aside from mobile Mara Jade skywalker is better. Jedi can do lightsaber assult but I didnt think that that was all that much better, any one want to inform me as to why Jedi out ranks Skywalker?
Stats
Mara Jade Skywalker Cost: 49 (+4)

a few reasons...
1) Mara jedi (AE) is a non melee piece with lightsaber. She cannot be blocked or reposted since she is not a melee piece. 2) Since she can move up to 6 and get her cunning twins off against and adjacent enemy, she can use lightsaber assault giving her 4 attacks for a total of 120 damage at a +16 attack to an adjacent enemy. 3) Lightsaber block can be quite handy against other big melee pieces (saved me several times). 4) 9 points cheaper than the newer Mara Skywalker.
Hope that helps.

It's really one thing. Jedi can make 4 attacks from 6 squares away, at best, Skywalker can make two without moving, or if you tech it out, two on the move from a max range of 8. Both have cunning, Jedi has a 80/120 dmg potential, whereas skywalker has a 40/60.

The twin with lightsaber assault can be devestating also. That's why I prefer that incarnation ofmara Jade over the more expensive one

Maybe I'm misunderstanding which is probably the case but couldn't she have a total max output of 120 against an adj enemy with cunning, lightsaber, Twin and Lightsaber Assault? she is a beast, especially when used with someone who gives her extra force points and Perhaps Ganner, Plus, her pose is awesome.

Um yes, not sure what could have been confusing in my statement, other than maybe you thought when I said, "from 6 squares away" as if I meant attacking 6 squares away, but I assumed it would be obvious that I was talking about moving up 6 into base with an enemy, same way the melee version has to do for it's attack. Obviously Mara Jedi can also shoot for 20/40 as well, but someone already mentioned that. And to be honest, while a useful trick, it isn't the primary reason she is used over the other one, and over other figures. If she didn't have assault, people wouldn't play Jedi very often either, Kol and Shado would be almost always a better option than either Mara.

Bill, I think qvos might have been because you mistyped and put "80/12" and left of the "0" on "120".

Mara Jade Jedi can also shoot. Granted, she's not used to sit back and pick people off, but it's still a nice thing to have. To be honest, Mara Jade Skywalker got shafted with her point cost.
Sincerely, Jester007

And I rarely make use of the shooting aspect of Mara. I use her primarily to base. My misunderstanding was in the 80/12 reference. Just glossing over it , i misread it perhaps thinking the 12 was refering to her attack. Sorry I misunderstood you

Mara Jade Jedi is one of the devastating attack weapons in the game. It's the twin/lightsaber assault that's key; she can charge in from 6 squares away, and unload 120 points of damage at +16. Lightsaber block doesn't work against her, so unless you have Soresu Style Mastery or Lightsaber Defence, you're probably doing to take a lot of damage against her. Her stealth and lightsaber block help her to survive too.
Mara Jade Skywalker is OK, but she doesn't have anywhere near the same firepower - even if she cost around 40 points, i'm not sure that she'd see very much game-time. I've never even seen her used - the New Republic jedi that mostly get played in my area are Mara Jedi, Ganner, Anakin Solo, Kol Skywalker, Kyp Durron, and Kyle Katarn JBM. I'm sure the new Jaina is good too, while Grand Master Luke is a pretty interesting option as well.

I was really hoping this topic was going to be about the new Zahn book based on her. I cant wait for some more Jade oriented story. Plus Zahn is writing it so you know it's going to be good. http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Choices-Timothy-Zahn/dp/0345511255/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1302226286&sr=8-18On topic, it would be nice if the melee one were more useful outside of scenarios but alas it's not.

I don't play very much new republic so the only Mara Jade experience I have is the imperial one from rebel storm and Arica.
BUT... my sister LOVES Mara Jade Jedi (as well as anything to do with Mara Jade such as the comic books). Mara Jade Jedi was the rare out of the first booster she ever opened and she has played her in 90% of her squads from a year ago to today. I have only seen her use Mara Jade Skywalker ONCE, not because she thinks it is a bad piece, she just can't use her with her favorite piece already in the squad. (my sister was the one to open that booster as well)

(my sister was the one to open that booster as well) that's cool too. Everybody has a favorite piece to play for one reason or another even if it might not be the best. That's one of the dumbest things about the game. I always like playing Darth maul on speeder just because I pulled him out of a booster pack while on vacation in Hilton Head. Anyway most of the Maras are playable insome form or another. Also the new Zahn book will be awesome.. I always wish I could ask him how he felt about his character being killed off in the legacy series.

Plus you will be able to understand the binary language of moisture vaporators and binary load lifters.

I emailed Sterling Hershey, the author of a lot of the SWM Scenarios and several of the RPG books. *For those who don't recognize his name.* And he answered my questions and was a really nice guy. Very easy to talk to. On topic, I just wish I had a Mara Jade mini period. Been hard to find her.
