Not that I want to... But...
Is it possible to build a New Republic squad without any mini from the New Republic faction?
Example:
A team made up of just Yuuzhan Vong Ossus Guardians and Antarian Rangers and just claim that it is a New Republic squad.

The rulebook says "When building a squad, first choose the faction the squad belongs to. Each character's stat card gives its game statistics, including a faction symbol that shows which faction it can fight for." (p.15)
That suggests to me that you pick a faction before picking any models, it looks like a two step process. Step 1, pick a faction. Step 2, add figures that are allowed in that faction.
So yes I suppose you could have a New Republic Squad with no New Republic figures in it, an Imperial squad of just Mas Amedda, and all sorts of other very silly things.

Hey Yoto Yoto, First off, for the insanely quick response. Second, I was wondering if you have ever been to one of the games Lily Wan talks about. I ask because my work duties have changed and schedule looks like it will be changing as well. I might never be able to attend the Seattle games any more with their normal schedule. (but also frees me up every Sat/Sun) Also the timing of the games means I sit in rush hour and it takes me almost as long as it would to get there as it would to drive to Portland. Thirdly, I have been wanting to check out the Ground Kontrol arcade in Portland (Have you been there?). I love the area because I spent half my youth in Salem.

I just started playing again, but yes there is a group that meets at Guardian Games in Portland on Saturdays starting at noon. It's a bit of a haul, but if you're willing to do the drive I'd be happy to give you a game or three.

So........ you can have a squad with Jaina, sotj, call it a mando squad, and have the other pieces fringe, not mando??

Something like this would only come up with an ability like New Republic Hunter or something. I think the ruling would be that Affinity doesn't kick in until the squad has been determined, thus you would need one other Mando piece for it to be considered anything but New Republic.

That's incorrect Brad, you do not need another mini to call it a Mando squad. This is an old ruling, where the one mini can be in either faction due to affinity, and so it can be there regardless of what else is in the squad. You can actually build an all fringe squad and call it whatever faction you want as well I believe.
Now, as to if it matters or not, well that would be a pretty rare instance. And further, you must declare before the tournament begins what faction you are using. You can't change it midway because you don't want your Jaina subject to Mando Hunter or something like that.
