Are there any blank maps (just the squares) that can be printed and used for making custom maps?

I think the closest you get to blank is the backs of the early starter set maps. One was dusty gray and the other was sandy colored. I think D&D has similar maps.
If you're looking to make on-the-fly tabletop maps, you might want to get a "battle mat" and some dry-erase markers.
If you're talking about making a custom map using the computer, it would be easy enough to create a one-inch grid.
Good luck!

A battle mat? What is that, and where can they be bought? Yes, I am looking for more of simple custom maps, rather than a computer made map.

You could also take a white poster board , and a yardstick, and make 1 inch lines on each end, then draw lines end to end. Then you can always put your own cover and obstacles in.

You could always download some graph paper from the net, cut it doen to 8.5x11 sheets and use Paint or a similar program to fill it in to whatever color you want; 4 sheets and you have a regulation sized map.
Be creative and have fun.
