i hope they make miniatures games with more mounted maps like the revenge of the sith map.
i predict miniatures with some kind of base with dials or other moving parts and a hex based maps. and i got a stong feeling we will see 3D terrain too:) just a guess.

FF's pattern with this type of game in the past has been to release some sort of base set, then do periodic expansions. So yes, there'd most likely be other kinds of ships over time.

So it isn't going to be random packs? Just some sets with certain guys that you get for sure? Do you happen to somehow know that?

I'm thinking if there was ever any sort of figure combat game, it would most likely look something like Descent. It's essentially their D&D Minis game.

Descent is an excellent game. I'm not entirely sure how it would translate, though; I suppose players could be heroes (Leia, Han, Luke, Chewie, Lando, etc.) and the GM would control Imperial characters.

Are we going to have to paint our pieces for this? SWM was simple enough I could teach it to my friends (hah) and my students in grade 2. I don't know. I have a bad feeling about this... Well, I'm not familiar with the company, so I'll wait and see how it turns out. I'm interested in the spaceship battle thing anyway, since WOTC's disaster-of-a-game did no justice to the idea of spaceship combat. I think even the WEG version was probably better...

I think I read for the X-Wing game that it comes pre-painted.

One thing that works against the possibility of a new skirmish miniatures game is that FFG is just getting into that market with Dust Warfare, which is the next step to Dust Tactics, a SWM-like board game.
For Dust, all the miniatures are unpainted plastic, aside from a limited edition Tactics set which came pre-painted, at a much higher price. The miniatures aren't randomly packed, and combat is general squad-level.
Like X-Wing, Dust Warfare was just announced, and will be demoed at GenCon.
Though some of the other interesting things FFG has done with Tactics is issue a card update set, which updated early pieces to make them more usable with current rules, so when it comes to using your miniatures, FFG seems to have a good record of keeping older stuff useful?

I'm not expecting a Collectible style game. I believe they used to have a few CCGs, but not anymore. Seems more buy in one kind of deal. Which I won't mind if they get around to say, TOR minis.

This is interesting news. I don't think "prepainted minis" when I think FFG, but I think they're smart enough to realise that the collector market will make up the difference. The X-Wing game sounds interesting, hope they don't make it unpainted at the last minute like Star Trek Fleet Captains...
For the card game, it does seem strange to have a cooperative SW game? It sounds very similar to the LotR card game, which is a good game. Players have their decks, and have to complete their quests against a game-controlled evil deck. Playing cooperatively with LotR makes more sense to me. With SW though... that means you can only play *against* Vader, and never *with* Vader? Dunno about that...

Well, even if the minis are not pre-painted, perhaps we can get some good starship combat rules that we can use the SSB ships with. A little bit of adapting the stats and away you go!
***EDIT***
Also, I caught at the bottom of the page that they'll be doing an RPG too. That's good news! While I didn't play the WotC game - I'm a die hard WEGer from day one - I did use their supplemental stuff as background and as a guideline for all the E1-E3 era stuff that WEG didnt (well, couldn't) cover.
While I'll probably ignore the new engine (unless it knocks my socks off), the source material will hopefully be worthwhile.

FFG is taking over for WotC as the 900-pound gorilla for the board game hobby. Grabbing licenses left and right, first with Games Workshop titles, then Cosmic Encounter, then Dune, now this.
I might be more enthusiastic if I could stop envisioning this looking like so many of their other games, with a handful of molded plastic pieces, a bunch of cards and cardboard chits, and a $60-100 price tag. Followed by a seemingly endless stream of $25-30 expansions.
