They've made their first announcement... http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=2528I'm putting this in SWM general, because it sounds like one of the first games, X-Wing is a tactical miniatures game... http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=174&enmi=X-Winghttp://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=2526Quote:X-Wing is a tactical ship-to-ship combat game in which players take control of powerful Rebel X-wings and nimble Imperial TIE fighters, facing them against each other in fast-paced space combat. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space combat throughout its several included scenarios. Select your crew, plan your maneuvers, and complete your mission! They've also announced the card game, a cooperative, all-in-one-box (though I'm sure they'll do expansions) http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite.asp?eidm=175&enmi=Star%20Wars:%20The%20Card%20Game

Awesome. These guys make good games. I wouldn't expect them to fail at this. Too bad they haven't announced a continuation of what we got from wizards, but any news is good news. Sweet!

Release date is Q1 2012 for X-Wing (ship miniatures). Presumably they've had the license for a while now, they just weren't going to make any announcements until they had something definite to announce.
If you're talking about figure miniatures, then yeah, it'll probably be a little while.

Well I won't get my hopes up, chances are the game won't become popular leaving it with a small community and no where to play. I haven't even heard of FFG until now. I'm willing to also bet the game will ignore the existence of the EU over the kiddy era(The Clone Wars).

FFG is actually pretty good about not going with what is the sure "commercially successful" option. For example, they have multiple very good lord of the rings games, but are one of the few companies that uses completely unique art rather than riding Peter Jackson's vision. Likewise, their Arkham Horror game is absolutely fantastic. I have no doubt that they will produce some fantastic products. Both fun, and challenging. I do not think its reasonable to assume that they will "bring back" swm. SWM is not their product, and, except for the fan community keeping it alive, its financially dead. I am more concerned of the possibility that now that some one publicly owns the miniatures license, the C&D notices will start rolling in on our party.

I suspect that FFG will not make a straight skirmish game like WotC did. I wouldn't be surprised, though, to see a scenario-based miniature game, where the scenario is driven by a deck like the card game. They might walk the line between miniature game and board game pretty closely.

My concern, while I believe that aminis game would be sound, is that there would not be the variability in armies. So at most Rebels, Inperials, separatists, Republic with guys like Boba thrown in with The Empire and Cad Bane with Seps.

From their Facebook page: [Fantasy Flight Games] Make sure to get into the demos of both games this week at Gen Con!
So they will have demos out for people to see what it is about.

I would only buy if they do minis and they are same size and style as WOTC. Would like same rules but would be happy just for new miniatures for Vsets.
Not interested in the ships at all.

Both games sound fun. Definately interested in X-wing. It almost sounds like they are using the game for inspiration, which would be awesome.

Not interested in the ships at all. A possible approach (and I think it might be financially to their benefit)... cheap plastic unpainted minis in a scenario game. More expensive painted minis as a separate purchase. The painted minis could market to both the WotC holdouts (for customs) and people wanting to pimp out their game with upgrades over unpainted minis.

from the product page :
The X-Wing starter set includes everything you need to begin your battles, such as scenarios, cards, and fully assembled and painted ships.

If they do a starship game and the pieces are comprable to the current starship minis BUT the new game actually has decent rules I could see a place I might enter.

I remember stumbling across this X-Wing thing and FFG somewhere a few days ago, but I don't remember how. I've never heard of these guys before either (then again, I'm pretty unfamiliar with other TCG/Mini/RPG makers other than Wizards), so it'll be interesting to see what this new dark horse can come up with. Anyway... dreadtech wrote:Not interested in the ships at all. Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. Starship Battles from Wizards was an interesting idea, but it was sort of a flop as far as collectors were concerned. I thought it was cool and I liked it but, with such a large "character" miniature base, it seems that few other people did. I would have really liked to see it end up on sites like this and be playable in Vassal (which it actually is, but the complete stats are so hard to find), but because of collectors' relative lack of interest, this didn't happen. It's too bad, too, because I think Starship Battles had potential. All this being said, I would want FFG's new X-Wing game to be compatible with Starship Battles. However, after reading the game description, it became very obvious that this is far from the case, and X-Wing is going to be a standalone thing. Since there will be no compatibility between SB and X-Wing, FFG's already lost much of my interest. The least they could do is continue with SWM in the style and game mechanics as Wizards so sets from FFG and WotC would be compatible, but I don't see that happening. I might try it if stats, etc. eventually get put on site like this and it's playable on Vassal, but I'm not going to spend any money on it. I'm still deeply disappointed that WotC dropped the license for SWM. The collectivity of SWM and the game itself just hasn't been the same without Wizards. I appreciate that fans are trying to keep the game alive with these V-Sets, but you can only do so much with them. To be honest, I don't particularly care for them, especially because there's no way that these sets can be distributed to a much larger audience without potentially running into legal trouble. I'm also a person who would rather have a completely new piece to add to a collection than just a card with new stats for a proxy mini. It's a novel idea, but it's not for me. Now that I've gone completely off track, I'll just finish by saying I don't have very high expectations for FFG with this new set, and it'll take a lot for their initial set to impress me.

I had a look over it. I might see what the X-Wing game is about. I am now not really expecting new SWM fodder, although we may get compatible minis.
But who knows what they will do with Star Wars. It is not like WotC made the best system possible, they might create something that absolutely blows SWM away. It will be interesting to see what their developers come up with. Mal sehen :)

Personally I think the V-sets are really cool, I dont think you would find ANY one here who wouldn't rather have new minis, but we have what we have (and I have heard rumors that even some people or individuals are working on that!) but the cards are great. One thing you might want to try is customizing the minis. Thats how I got back in to the game and it makes playing with the V-set cards so much more fun to use the actually charter with his/her padawan or enemy in a game. Not every ones good when they start but theres literally no limit to what you can create, take a look at some of cerousmutor's customs, or lilywans and check it out. I think it might just give you that second wind for the game you once loved.
