It has always been a thorn in my side that not all or even most Jedi/ Sith characters did not have some way to block attacks, even though this is practically the first thing they would learn while training with a lightsaber. So, long ago, I instituted a House Rule that any character that had a lightsaber and Force points could use Lightsaber Defense for acost of 2 Force Points, even if it is not on their card. If the character had, say, Lightsaber Block, the character could use their printed ability (and it's cost) instead. Recently, during a casual game, I had another player complain that this rule was not fair, despite he being allowed to use it as well. Part of this objection was that my Sqyud consisted of Palps on Throne, Vader Unleashed, VA Unleashed, and Sith Nightsister.
My question is: does anyone else use a similar rule? Any way that I could change or adjust it to seem more "fair" (even though I think it is fair)?

One thing to realize is that the pieces were designed to be lacking block/reflect/defense and were costed accordingly. Throwing in house rules like that imbalances characters and thus the game.
Another thing to consider is that the game is an abstraction. The natural ability of a character to block and deflect would be considered as part of the character's HP and Defense. Lightsaber Deflect/Block/etc. would represent a character's heightened proficiency in the technique, not the fact that they can or can not do it.

I don't know about this man, i hate seeing a five point youngling have deflect and then seeing all these other jedis without it lol. as far as changing it to where everyone does have it as a house rule, i have to agree that that can cause some balancing issues.

I understand the balance issues and the point costing problems that are being brought up. But this is for casual play, not Official or Sanctioned. As I said I played for years with this rule in casual play with no issue until the other the other night.

If it's something that leave's a bad taste in someone's mouth, I wold drop the house rule, since you don't want them to stop playing.

Sounds like a reasonable enough House rule if everyone playing cares to use it, otherwise use it selectively. Just don't use it with people who don't want it in their match. Make it a Compromise for all.

I know some in the past have used a similar house rule, but instead of costing Force 2, made the save 16. Those with the ability printed on the card still had save 11 for their ability. Might be worth discussing with the group - especially the one who didn't like the other version if he thinks this is more fair. Haven't actually played that way myself and I'm sure there are some pieces that could abuse it, but would help the CS / ROTS era pieces.

I may change it so that it is 2 Force Points and a Save 16.
