Is there a list with rules of all the different game formats that can be played with Minis somewhere? All the major/common ones such as Dynamic Duo or Tile Wars?

I looked around quick on a few sites and didn't find anything like that. I might have just missed it, if it happens to be somewhere. I also cannot check the Holocron as it's currently down.

Mostly I am asking because New Players would benefit from such a resource. Also because I think it's just something important to have around in general.

And with the new Epic Duos out, it's one more to the list of non standard formats. Might be good to have a resource for it all.

That is a good suggestion.

There's a list of 'official' formats in the Floor Rules. It'd be all but impossible to list every single format, though, since you can always make up a new format on the spot.

Thats why I said the common ones. All the types that are generally known or accepted by the majority, and not stuff only 3 people know about.

Aren't the floor rules just sealed and constructed at various Point costs and Dynamic Duo?

I'd figure on some sort of article defining what all of the formats are to give people an idea of what else to do with their minis than the main game

Constructed, Sealed, Booster Draft, Dynamic duo, Tile Wars, Epic Duos, Fantastic Four... and so on with whatever I can't think of right now

Yes, you're right about the floor rules. I could have sworn Tile Wars made it onto that list.

It might be in the Gamers revision, I'm not sure. Last time I saw floor Rules was DCI stuff while WOTC had the game

It's not - I just checked. Maybe in the next revision.

Anyway, I don't know what the cutoff is for "common", but here are a bunch of play formats I've heard of...

Standard constructed. Normal point builds are 100-300 in increments of 50 (200 being the most common, and the one that determines the 'official' champion).

Sealed Booster - 2 boosters and build a squad. Normally 150.

Booster draft

Booster leagues - start with 2 boosters and get a new booster after each game to build up a restricted collection from which you build your squads. (Cicrush is starting up an online booster league right now.)

Dynamic Duo - 2 characters, cost = 100 exactly
Terrific Trio - 3 characters, cost 150 (maybe exactly? I forget.)
Fantastic Four - 4 characters, cost 200 (maybe exactly? I forget.)

Tile Wars

Epic Duos - 1 epic character + 1 more character. 200 points max

Epic 500 - Not sure of the official name, but billiv recently mentioned it. 500 points, 16 characters max, 1 epic, 3 commanders max.

Mass battles - Multiple rulesets for mass battles exist. It's been stated that an 'official' one will be coming out soon, making use of the new Epic characters.

Scenarios - tons of scenarios out there. See the Ultimate Missions books and the scenario packs, for example.

SWM:CE - Star Wars Miniatures: Campaign Edition. Basically a roleplaying game, but heavy on the character advancement and linked scenarios/battles, and light on the actual roleplaying. See http://bswmce1.runboard.com/ .

Jawa Format - I have no idea who named this one. Build a horrible squad. Each person gives the horrible squad to the opponent to play with.

Surprise Synergy - I think I got the name wrong here, and I also don't know who invented it. Anyway, you build two equal strength squads of 100 points and your opponent does the same. Simultaneously, you each select one of the other player's 2 squads. Combine the squad you selected with the one you were left with (that the opponent did not select). Play.

I'm sure there are others...

The SWMiniverse podcast is a GREAT place to listen for ideas for different ways to play the game. Pay attention for the segment titled "League Play". The guys who run the podcast also run a League at their LGS, and they have fun new formats to play every week. Listen to some of their backlog of episodes to get some good ideas.

Yeah but its pretty unreasonable to tell someone to listen to hours and hours of podcasts to learn about a game. It would be better if one of the major sites had a section for this stuff. you know.. Easy Access.

Or you could actually look on their website for these things. =P

And besides, the podcast is great, I recommend it in your downtime. It's free, and it's more Star Wars Minis!

It's a nice site, and I've been there plenty, but it doesn't quite have what I was bringing up in this topic at all.

The only official game formats are 100-point Constructed, 100-point Dynamic Duo, 150-point Constructed, 100-point Sealed, 100-point Booster Pack Draft, 125-point Sealed, 125-point Booster Pack Draft, 150-point Sealed, and 150-point Booster Pack Draft. I don't know what you want other than that.

You missed 200 point constructed.

And I'm not sure how it wasn't clear when, between myself and FlyingArrow, we brought up the most common Unofficial formats. And the idea would be to have a page where people can see a list for all these somewhere.

It's not as if you don't see something like tile wars get mentioned frequently enough. So I figure why not have a Section on a major site for all these Fun formats. Whether they are for official or tournament play is irrelevant. As it gives New or unfamiliar players a place to go to learn more about the game with ease, as well as give ideas on how else to play outside of basic constructed squads.

I would hope the intention of this thread is clear now.
