Why would I want a die that has a perfectly even distribution? Then I wouldn't get to roll all those crits!

I'll be using my RotS Starter die a lot more now that I've seen the data qvos compiled. =)

My guess is his has a bubble near the twenty......that's why I use clear dice, garaunteed no bubble

Vassal seems to have a really strange distribution, like practically anti-Gaussian. I would probably politely ask my opponent not to play Mace Windu on there. The streaks of 1's are bad for both of us, but the streaks of 20's...

I don't remember the exact rolls that came up but I was once playing a fun game against a cousin using General Windu against her 100 points of minis. I'd nearly cleared her out except for one little Vornskr which I did lay a little damage on before the madness started. For something THREE turns in a row I lost initiative, got hit (I probably should have used Riposte but see following), missed the Paralysis save, missed the Paralysis save a second time after spending a FP, AND missed the poison save; I figured a single triple attack would have let me finish the little beast off but I was deprived of that for three turns while it finished me off.

As for my d20's I once did a "randomness test" with about a 100 rolls of each (not nearly enough samples, I know) and found some that were good but more importantly one that was extremely fond of 2s. I think it may be better to know which dice constantly roll low than which roll high assuming that average rolls can often suffice.

Dice are fickle things, since they are luck. I like what I've been hearing about your 'tests', even qvos' is neat, however in order to get a truly reliable result.. you'll need to spend all day rolling (and only using the 1 die you want to test). Statisticians, as a rule of thumb, go for 900-1000 iterations in order to get a result they can stand behind. If you've ever read opinion polls about elections, this is what they do.

Also, I remember that a while back Fool did a blind test of vassal dice vs real dice.. and it was found to have no major deviations (ie vassal dice are fairly random).

I can believe that. Also, as a computer programmer, I know how Random Number Generators work, and I'm sure that Vassal's is as good as any (randomly generating integers from 1-20 is easy). But sometimes it just feels so.... wrong, lol. It's one of those things that I believe, but it's hard to swallow. I've been wronged by that program too often.

Dice are a fickle thing. I have dice i will not touch with a 10 foot pole, because i have had nothing but terrible luck with them. I'm talking multiple gaming sessions where I said "I am using this freaking die until i roll out all of its demons"... and eventually i lost because my character accused me of trying to kill him. Multiple sessions with no roll above a 10.

On the other side, i have an orange d20 that came with my swm revenge of the sith starter (the one with the cardboard unfolding map). My friends won't play me when i use that die because it rolls crits ALL the time.

I think you're right... there is something more than sheer chance when it comes to dice. I personally feel that shape, weight, etc all play in... or maybe its something metaphysical ;)

When I used to pkay tournaments at The Kid in Me the judge there - Jarred and Paul - used to be very superstitious about wasting rolls with dice......heh, I git a black and purple dice for my "goth" jedi in an rpg......and the die has never passed a deflect save......its as uncooperative as......a goth teen

I guess it depends on luck, and how many times the dice has been rolled...
if you consent to chaos theory, a butterfly flapping its wings + a person stirring a teacup could effect the likelihood of the outcomes in a game BigGrin Almost the same as what surface it roles on, or what happens when multiple numbers come up?

I have a 'lucky' dice that seems too random. It never makes any pattern; just when you think its going to make a pattern, it veers off the rails. Its a Metal Embossed dice, very precious in my dice collection...

And then, there are biased dice; my Clone Wars Battle Pack dice is weighted to give more 20s and 1s (out of the box too, its a misprint or something).

Dradles are my favorite type of D4,
spinning tops segmented are the best for D6 and D(irregular number), with a fibonacci number of spins on an even surface producing the fairest results. Of course, then the argument shifts to how a person spun the top... BigGrin

We play a game locally on Anzac Day (equivalent of veterans day) called Two Up, its a bit of fun and is only legally able to be played on Anzac Day.

Anywho, thanks for the great thread - reading peoples (mis)fortunes with dice roles is always fun BigGrin

Anyone who has played RPG's and likes Star Wars should read Darths and Droids. Everything about the movies makes so much more sense when viewed as an RPG. They're almost at the end of episode 3, and plan to do all of them.
