Personally, I don't see why Affinity should be so restrictively interpreted with regards to Unique in this case.

Versatility specifically breaks the Unique rule of having more than one version of a Unique character in your squad during a game, but you will never have more than "A" particular unique character in your squad at the same time (outside of betrayal of course) so still meets the requirements in my view. I also think it is a delayed portion of squadbuilding, unlike Carbonite where you must choose the replacement during squad construction.

I think the simpler ruling for Carbonite would have been to allow Jaina's affinity to work for the chosen Han with the obvious caveat that if Jaina is dead before Han is freed you are just SOL. With Versatility, that situation couldn't happen since the switch is made before the skirmish begins.

In any case, I have no axe to grind with the ruling. It's a minor disappointment that makes for an interesting discussion. :)


side note: Darth Vader, Sith Apprentice's card says "A character whose name contains 501st..." so does that mean you can only bring in one 501st Trooper during the game? Wink (don't answer, just having a little fun)

I don't think the rule is 'using a Force Power once per turn', but 'spending force points once per turn'. (Force Renewal 1 is a force power that is used every turn, but doesn't count toward that limit.) I could be wrong on that, though.


The rule is spending force points once per turn. You can't spend 0 force points twice, because 0 still counts as an amount of force points, you might want to say just to make it easier to understand. Also, you're not spending force points when you use renewal, so it doesn't count.

It's a question worth asking.

I've been pushing the "one Han Solo" interpretation on Jaina's Affinity because restricted Affinity is the only way I can make sense of NickName's ruling on Frozen in Carbonite. (Apart from that ruling, I agree with you - I don't see why we should have the more restricted interpretation of Affinity.)

Regarding Darth Vader, Sith Apprentice... to paraphrase Bill Clinton, it depends on what the definition of 'a' is. Sometimes 'a' means 'one' and sometimes 'a' means 'any'. ThumbsUp

What MaliciousCrumb and Sithborg said. Spending 0 Force Points on a Force power who cost is reduced counts as spending Force Points. Regarding Levitation, that replaces attacks so you could only do it once anyway. But the restriction is on spending force points, not using force powers.

Currently, I believe the only force powers that don't require spending Force points are Renewal, Master of the Force, and the starting force amount (e.g. "Force 2"), but there's nothing in the rules that would prevent the creation of a future force power that didn't require spending force points such as:

Jedi Movement:
Usable only once per skirmish, for this turn this character gains Speed 12 and ignores enemy characters, pits, low objects, and difficult terrain.

Laugh and the definition of "can" as well.

Unless I missed one, that is the only WotC version of affinity that includes non-uniques and uses "a character", but hey, it's official right? Tongue

Yeah, "can" is used as "must" sometimes, which is a huge difference. It CAN get really weird in a lot of situations...

And just FYI, the glossary defination of Hand of the Emperor trumps Anakin, The Chosen One's card for now. This follows the standard way to resolve such issues. I'm going to have to have some discussions with others, since changing such a non-variable ability of a WOTC power needs some discussion.

with Versatility (and Pallaeon's CE) when the character is defeated do you get the points of the original, or the new character?
