The bonus preview from SHNN this week was:
Geonosian Soldier with Sonic Cannon, 22/60 RM: Hoth Trooper with Atgar Cannon Cost 17 70 hp 14 def +6 att 30 dam Speed 4, Forward Positioning, Heavy Weapon, Machinery, Sonic Weapon (when this character makes an attack, the target enemy and all adjacent characters to the target cannot use force powers for the rest of the turn, and all characters damaged are activated for the rest of the round), splash 20, Synchronised Fire (allies with sonic weapon who combine fire grant +6 attack instead of +4)
What do you guys think of this - there's a lot of power there for 17 points, but some obvious downsides too - especially heavy weapon, but also the low attack, and the chance to activate/damage your own pieces.
But both of the new Geonosians look strong, and we all know that Geonosian Drones are already very strong - I think there's some potential for all Geonosian squads with Poggle, a BX Spotter, and Whorm for support.

Is that an automatic activation when damaged? Coupled with Splash makes this a wicked piece.

As it turns out there are a number of pieces in this set that have serious power in one aspect but also a serious drawback. It wasn't conscious in every occurrence, and this is more of a hindsight observation, but many came about through organic design process. Frequently we realized that certain pieces would never get used without an advantage, but were overpowered without a drawback. So a natural balancing mechanism happened to many figures to make them interesting and useful in certain squads, but not auto-includes or dominant in all squads. This is not even the best example of that - but as the set is unveiled I think we will see this concept again more clearly. I actually like it when it happens that people feel this way. Intrigued by a piece, and a desire to use it - but it is not automatically apparent how best to use it. In a way I feel like this is a success. Pure power creep makes something an auto include or blatantly obvious about how to use it. Creative balances cause conundrums. There is potential, but it is tricky to use. With the Geonosians in this set - are they usable? Yes. Are they top tier? I don't think so. But that's ok. I think there are some fun and decently competitive builds, but I don't see them breaking the top 8 at GenCon. It certainly was a desire to make Geonosians playable outside of poggle bombs. The fact that anyone is considering it means a step in the right direction.

You know, I really can't wait for this set to be released I keep thinking about making squads and am like "but I could make a totally different build when the next set comes out" ugh Good stuff to come BTW What are you guys most excited to see in this next set? Like for me I want to know if we will get to see some Lost Tribe subfaction pieces in this set. Remember we only have one spoiled name for the sith And I can't wait to know what Darth Maul, Death Watch Overlord does! I'm guessing Affinity for Savage Opress and Death Watch to the Sith or more likely Affinity for Maul to go to the CIS and bring the Death Watch with him. Other than that who knows?

I always wanted more artillery in minis. Funny, I just made a custom like this.

Finn Galfridian is listed as non-melee. Is that correct?

He used a blaster in the comics so I'd assume it was intentional.

And his RM is Jax who has a blaster drawn. I'm actually a little surprised he is Fringe and not NR...I didn't read all of Invasion, but he was working pretty close with Luke's NJO. But I do get Fringe, not saying it doesn't make sense. I like Finn a lot, he is a nice versatile Force User (I feel like that is something I say I lot, apparently I really like flexibility and someone who fills a lot of roles in this game.)

I just caught up with tonight's episode - I wasn't around for most of it to catch it live. There were three previews tonight. It was great to hear timmerb123 on the show - I don't think I've ever heard his voice before: Quote:#34 Galactic Alliance Officer New Republic, RM: CorSec Officer Cost: 22 60 HP 17 def +9 attack 20 damage sa: double attack, flak shield (Whenever this character takes damage it reduces the damage by 10 with a save of 6. Attacks from adjacent enemies ignore this ability), penetration 10, rapport 5 (costs 5 less in a New Republic squad), ce: allies whose name contain Galactic Alliance gain Flak Shield
I'm a little bit unsure about the strength of this guy's CE, which is the main reason you'd run him; most of the Galactic Alliance guys are kind of fragile, so you don't want them getting shot at anyway, But the v-set Galactic Alliance guys are all pretty decent, so there might be something good there - maybe with the Special Guards, as they have potentially high damage, and don't have Stealth. Quote:#33 Taxtro Grave Imperials, RM: Clone Commander Bacara Cost: 27 60 HP 17 def +8 attack 20 damage unique, trooper, careful shot +4, deadeye, independent outfit (also counts as a Fringe character for the purpose of commander effects), stealth, twin attack "All right, I give up. Somebody say it." "Okay. The Hand of Judgment?" He's gotta be good with Mitt'Thrawn or Talon Karrde Information Broker, right? You can get him up to 80 damage at +16 if he doesn't move (both of those pieces have a movement breaker and a damage boost) - so you might be able to trade him for a more expensive character 70-80 hp piece like a Cad Bane or a Captain Rex. And since it was the 200th episode, they threw in a bonus preview: Quote:#9 Darth Maul, Death Watch Overlord Sith, RM: Maul, COTS Cost: 45 110 HP 20 def 14 att 20 dam Special Abilities: Unique, Melee, Twin Attack, Affinity (Mandalorian), Deadly Attack (Crit on 19/20), Tera Kasi style (reduce damage by 10 against melee attacks) Force Powers: force 2, force renewal 1, force cloak, lightsaber assault, lightsaber riposte Commander Effects: A character whose name contains Savage Opress may be in your squad regardless of faction. Death Watch followers within 6 squares gain +4 attack and +10 damage. Seems like it opens up a lot of fun squad building options, right? Good piece for 45 points. I like the idea of getting Savage into Sith with Force Renewal and Bandon's CE, although it's probably more of a casual build.

I couldn't comment on how close/far you were to the actual mini at that time. Just the timing was funny. Maybe it's people being psychic or maybe it's millions of monkeys on typewriters. Maybe both.

Interesting, I thought there would be more Obi-Hate Awesome character, with great combinations! lightsaber assault and lightsaber riposte become amazing when combined with twin. Tera Kasi style on another maul is curious... It's good and I'm glad to have it for sure! So he has the same defenses as the Sith Infiltrator version so he will have a similar play style. The CE will help out the Death Watch since their Attack and Damage is lower, I'm glad Pre Vizsla hasn't been rivaled out, especially since he greatly benefits from Mual's CE. Funny how mobile he is with twin and Assault since when I made a custom Cyborg Maul (not the CW Series Maul, but the Old Wounds version) I was told he shouldn't get 4 attacks and he wouldn't be very mobile at all since he got those cyborg legs. This guy will see play time in my Squads (Death Watch or not) I'm missing some hatred for Obi-wan Kenobi, but it's not a big deal, though I don't think Jedi Hatred woulda hurt. To bad he can't bring the Death Watch into the Sith Faction, but really that wouldn't really help them anyway.
