I also feel it's not really the sets that are making old ones obselete it's the characters in the set replaceing/ updating old one to be competitive. Why do you think they released a new Vader in every set (which I feel they didn't need). I'll provide some examples. We hadn't seen a Durge figure since Clone Strike so WOtC said okay time for a new one and it had to be competitive with the new Meta so out with the large base, flight and CE and in with Resilient, Jedi Hunter and Triple attack. Darth Vader Jedi Hunter made the RS vaders look like a joke but no one complained because he was so much better. Think about GGDAC one of the common nominations for "broke the game in half over his knee then blew up the pieces) In all reality he is just an updated Grevious Supreme commander better suited to the current meta at the time.

That was one of WotC's contractual obligations with Lucasfilm, where they were required to have a Vader or Anakin in every set.

I think that's kind of stupid, but I won't be complaining about it if a company picks up the game and that's one of the requirements.

I did not know that but it makes sense now why he was in Bounty Hunters and KoToR (And hey at least those 2 versions are arguably 2 of the best)

I dont know if they were REQUIRED but it was an advertising scheme. If some one who has never played the game picks up a random booster for the first time, who do they want? Luke, Vader, Han, Leia and so forth. Same reason in the later set that the unknown (or less known) characters were made VR like Hondo Karr and the powerful famous characters are rare, flobi.
