leshippy wrote:@theultrastar Comparing what you get from GenCon to what you get at the Kokomo regional really isn't a fare comparison. Bryan who owns the shop, plays and wants to keep the game alive. He barely makes any money on the regional and most of the prizes are donated by local players. As a local player we don't mind because we know it draws a crowd and helps keep the game alive.
Yeah good prize support draws a crowd, because win or lose it's a fun event then. I can't say the same for Gencon whether the comparison is fair or not. I know during the two days I was there, there was a guy who played in all of the Jedi Challenge, he spent his 42 dollars and besides the promo cards he didn't get anything in return. Not exactly sure how anyone involved in this plans on getting gamers to continue to come back year after year. Aside from the guys that are going to return just because it's Gencon and would play, and pay money to do so even if their were no prize support.

I guess it all depends on why you show up. I've gone to events that had tons of cool prize support and had a lousy time. Went to Gen Con, walked away with nothing, had an awesome time. Now I just go to events to play with fun people.

Don't get me wrong: I love some cool prizes and prize support! But for me it's all about the people and the game. Maybe it's kinda like professional sports: If you're no longer playing for the love of the game, you should either take a holiday or consider finding a new career.

Yeah, I didn't actually play in any events, but I had a blast hanging out with everyone while judging.

Yeah that would have been me right? But you left out the part where i went 0-2 in 200 and dropped. I think everyone has there own reason to go to GenCon and we are not going to please everyone every time.

Greetings Force users and all others,
GenCon for me guys is tradition. I have been coming to GenCon ever since way back when Black in Blue first started, and Bill and I squared off in the 150 championship way back in the days of the "Universe" set, where we were both using the original Thrawn and Jedi Hunter Vader! I come for the spectacle, the people, the comradery, and for the love of Star Wars, the movie I watched 13 times in the theatre with my Dad, when I was 7 yrs old ( yes you know my age now)! I go to have fun playing a game, win or lose........................Nothing in life is free guys! Just wait until the government charges us for air (lol). But seriously though, I don't expect anything but just good people that want to have fun, when I come to GenCon. I use the analogy of Las Vegas; I take $$$ there, expecting to lose it all, not coming home with anything ( Free drinks, laughs, good times, and memories that stay in Vegas :) ), if I do come home with money, well then it's gravy, and a pleasent surprise. I am just greatful that we have a supportive community of VOLUNTEERS, and that we have 6 virtual sets released, which I think is God sent and an amazing accomplishment. I think that all that should be said should be positive and offering friendly suggestions on what you would like to see, but to be negative and say, I won't come if there isn't better prize support, is totally self serving and is missing the point of GenCon altogether. I am greatful for all the wonderful things that SWM Gamers is doing and for keeping the game going!!!! I cannot thank you guys enough for all that you do!
Long live SWM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!May the Force be with us all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought there was good prize support this year. But then, I finished top 8 and also 4rth in sealed, and our team was 2nd in the team tournament. Was the prize support top loaded? If so, then a casual player playing in competitive events may not be getting much. The casual player may not feel the same way most of us do; that we'd play without prize support. I'm not even sure if there's a problem with that. If there is, we either need to increase total prize support to reach lower finishers, or do away with the traditional concept of how it is dispersed.
Personally, I appreciate the efforts of everyone who did customs and Erics trophies he made. I've been in the position where all I came home with literally was a GM screen, so I appreciate it when I can come home like I did this year with some really well done customs to show off and play with. I'm of the opinion that we stay on the road we're on. Maybe for lower finishers have Vsets to give out.

To me, the prizes have always been secondary (or tertiary) to the people and the competition. I guess that's easy for me to say, as a person who has all the SW minis that I'll ever want or need. Having said that, I'll ALWAYS value and want customs as prize support. That's where the -Cool!- factor is for me.
Actually, what I think might be pretty cool is that we have SWM boosters ready to give away as prize support to people who participate in the "initiatory" events (like the BHC, mass battles, etc)...the events that normally draw new players. Let them see how fun SWM can be, and then give them some minis and even a tile/map or two, to continue the fun at home.

IMO, mass battle players don't want to play SWM. Try want to drive AT-ATs or snow speeders. Hoth and Endor don't use SWM rules, but something very simple. Trophies seem to be what these players want. We do have SWM v sets right there for players. This year I was able to draw some players back who had never heard of v sets before.

The bolded section is the information we need in order to make this kind of decision, so I'm glad you shared it.

If they want trophies, then the solution may be to have more and shorter events. That means more trophies. I don't know what kind of numbers there are, but it should be just large enough to have the trophy mean something, and then no larger so that the event can complete quickly and there can be another event with a different trophy. Just a thought.

This was my first year attending the con so I don't have any previous experience to go on, however I got some cool promo cards and had a chance to take home a full set of rebel storm as I finished in the top 8 of the minis madness tourney. Granted I didn't win so I didn't get the prize and I'm fine with that. The last time I checked Gencon was the best four days of GAMING, not the best four days of give me stuff. Yes it is nice to get prize support, especially for me as my collection is very small as of yet. However I think the fun of playing a game we love with some of the best people and players around is what the gencon experience should be about. I do think that shorter/easily accessable events like the BHC and minis' madness are a good way to go draw some new/ returning players, and if there was going to be a focus of trying to target a group for some prize support maybe that might be the area. Just my two cents anyway.

Just a thought. James is always looking for more folks to run events. We can only run more events if we get more game masters.
