PS - Bryan, thanks for the kind words. It is time for me to wash my LoS wristband. I swear, I'd lose my head if it weren't attached. I can't tell you how many times I misplaced my LoS tool before I started attaching it to my wrist. [embarrassed]

Here's my opinion*: Tim is awesome. He's one of the most active, friendly, and SWM-positive people that I've met. He's a huge asset to our community, and so anyone who's got a problem with him is just plain confused.
* Note that it's an opinion, and so I need to make a politically-correct disclaimer, so as not to raise the ire of those who are easily offended: By stating my opinion I am not inferring anything about the character or maturity of those who disagree with me. Now hopefully we can get back to our tolerant, nice, accepting, non-offensive, and sterilized dialogue. :P

This board involves people playing with tiny Wookiees. What's maturity again?

My problem is with all the limits the Republic have been getting? I have tried building tier 2 squads and every time there is a limit on every Republic for the most part since Vset 7. I understand wanting to move the Republic away from Rex, Yodabuck, Etc but I just want at least one tier 1 or 2 vset republic piece every three sets.
i have made over 200 Squads over the past few weeks. I like the game a lot but not when it comes to the republic and thats why I was getting so annoyed because thats all I was trying to build. I have moved past that and enjoy the game but doesn't see playing this game if all I am going to get are limits on republic pieces that doesn't build squads. Maybe the Vset 7 and vset 8 Republic pieces are linked together.
I would like to play test the Republic going forward so at least if when I get annoyed building the republic with new minis its part of my fault. I will keep my problems with Tim private going forward.

Within the first couple of v-sets: - GOWK's Soresu Style Mastery was reverted to respond to all attacks. - Mace LotLS was released in 2011, and won GenCon in 2012. He's fairly effective at beating up other melee pieces (including strafers), and his stats get crazy high in conjunction with GOWK. - Naboo Troopers, Naboo Pilots, and Captain Panaka of Theed were released in 2011, and have done very well at various things - they've won Regionals, the NZ National championships, made multiple top 8s at GenCon. - Foul Moudama from Vengeance is a really good new movement breaker.
It's not surprising that the designers have taken the foot off the pedal a little bit - the Republic were already arguably the most diverse faction before the v-sets, and they got a couple of significant new builds from Renegades and Rogues and the Battle of Theed sub-set. So it makes sense that a lot of their new pieces have been more themed.
Of the more recent sets, I do think that the new Cin Drallig, Quinlan Vos, and Aayla Secura are really good - they're all nice new Jedi options. I've lost to Obi-Wan Negotiator and Anakin Chosen One - they're reasonably formidable. And Tarpals allows the Republic to take advantage of fringe pieces like Evazan and Momaw. I don't know quite what to make of Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth, but he definitely opens up some new builds as well.
I think that Republic will always be among the best factions with all their movement options. Yobuck and Rex are still really good, and always have been.

Here's the faction breakdown of the GenCon top 8s for the last 3 years - so the post v-set era. If you're worried about the Republic's lack of top tier options, I'm glad you're not a Mando, Imperial, or Vong player.....
Old Republic: 4 Sith: 2 Republic: 8 Separatist: 2 Rebel: 2 Imperial: 1 New Republic: 5

Again my problem with the game is with the last two vsets and really the last one. Give me Republic squads that have one won regionals or a big tournament with new pieces other than a Reserve squad since that would not stand up in the states.

The Padawan Commander is from the newest set, and Nader won a Regional with it this year.
Jason took the Clone Trooper with Flamethrower into the top 4.
I think QV Double Agent, Cin Drallig, and Aayla are really good pieces - maybe the meta's not right for them now, but I think they could do well.

Cut to the interior of a rustic wagon, a haggard Nader peers into his crystal ball.... Prediction. At least 25% of the GenCon Champs Top 8 will be Republic and I'll say for the record it will be three. I find the statements regarding the Republic being limited more than a bit ridiculous; in fact given all of the accurate and salient points made above, the Republic has been one of the most successful factions both pre and post v-set. It might be more prudent to get the data points before starting a string about "the state of the game."

Although I don't feel like my minis life story needs to be posted, I am a little perturbed about where the game is at the moment.
I would first like to say that the last couple of times I've played I have said if things don't change I won't play competitively. That is pretty bitchy, and not everyone needs to hear it, also it's a bit of an exaggeration. so I apologise .
Second, my opinion and thoughts on the game at the moment, and a few things I dislike about it. I hate Daala. Which is the perfect way to put it, although it isn't an angry hate , it's a measured approach. :p I really don't think she is a gatekeeper, I will say again that Dr Daman has player all year with the same squad and lost only once. That to me isn't a gatekeeper. I don't want to undermine Dave and his achievements, he is definitely new Zealand's best player, but nobody should play 20 odd games with the same squad and lose only once, by 1 point, especially if the meta is as 'open' as we claim it is. I also think that if Star Wars was about little troopers shooting the crap out of everything, the empire would have won and we wouldn't be loving lightsabers, but blasters. I feel like she should have just been banned, and our meta not dominated by 5 pt troopers, Any squad with Jedi get pummelled. So what is my solution? I haven't figured it out yet, so feel free to give me pointers :) I truly think the game would be better without her. I enjoyed the thrawn dominance because it didn't beat EVERYTHING. It didn't even beat most things, unless a truly good player was playing it.
The other thing I would like to bring up is the 10 pt gambit. I don't have as much say in this as I do about Daala because I don't have the same experience with it. But playing in the vassal tournament with a squad which didn't have a piece that could safely secure gambit definitely hindered my play considerably. Being pinged 50 points in 5 rounds is just crazy, and I definitely suffered. I do understand that the squad I had would struggle, but in no way does the squad I took promote non engagement, and being stripped of 10 points a round is crazy. It's impractical for me to play that squad again, so it means I can't play a squad I really like because I can't secure gambit. I dislike the idea of a game being more about gambit than trying to play against your opponents squad. It looks open to abuse to me. And I feel like it isn't tested enough to throw into the game, when we do such a good job of testing things in every other aspect of the game, like new pieces.
I don't want to bag on anyone by writing this, or complain in any way, it is just good for thought, and I am curious to know what people think. Talk to me! Discuss. Or have I missed the train on this discussion? Because if I have I've just wasted a good 40 mins waiting for my flight, so thank you ;)
Lastly, I love this game. I love the people who play it, the community that it creates nationally and internationally, it is truly beautiful what it has done for our community in New Zealand :) Give me some feedback!

Hi, I have been playing this game since its launch. I see your point about Daala! My main concern in the game is the ease of shooters taking out Jedi and the like too easily! I think something needs to be introduced to balance it out a bit. Maybe to counter add a rule like a limit to the number of the same piece in a squad. Like the D&D miniature game does. That is my opinion, I don't play competitive any more for lack of players and the above point. I still love the game and this site has been Really helpful in my own expansion of custom pieces. I truly enjoy bring in characters from outside the Star Wars Universe, its helps feed my creative needs. Like backstories, making and customizing models! I LOVE IT!! Nothing beats a great friendly game with friends and family!

In the words of Kerry logan, maori Ora, Maori mate! I do have some minor concerns about the raise in gambit to 10pts. Mainly because we have more pieces with Forward positioning that can start the game in gambit. These pieces don't cost a ton. Of course they will be a big target and taken out quickly, but by the time the opponent does that, they might have gotten more than their costs worth in gambit points. Take the Geonosian with sonic Cannon figure. Costs super cheap (15pts?) but can start the game in gambit. It has a fair amount of HP and can live long enough to get at least a couple of rounds of gambit, i would think. I do think that swarm squads still have an advantage even with 10pt gambit, becuase they will just target the opponent's pieces trying to get gambit. I mostly think the 10pt gambit is a very good idea simply for the fact that a person can get a 3pt win against a player with 100pts of commanders sitting in his start area that are impossible to kill/reach in the allotted time.
