Random ideas

1. limit non uniques to a max of 4 per squad. ( I.E. 4 mouse droids only, 4 Stormtroopers, 4 Rax Troopers)

2. All CE are now "within 6 squares"

3. No booming voice

4. No unpreventable damage

5. no tempo control

6. All characters without the melee ability have a max base damage of 10 ( this is more of personal thing with me than anything. Melee beats get eaten alive by their shooter counterparts)

:Edit: Even something as simple as no more Accurate shot, or any ability that gets around "targeting". It almost eliminates the purpose of "fodder" pieces... because most shooter squads just shoot past them.

7. Vong not allowed (again, this one is more me than anything else. I can't stand the Vong, or their faction. And now that they are not canon I could care less if they were eradicated from the game completely)

8. I'm sure certain pieces in general would have to be banned, obviously depending on what rules are accepted and what not.

EDIT: 9. A activation limit would be neat... maybe you squad can have any umber of characters.. but you only get X activations. Example. I have 20 pieces in my squad, but I can only activate 16 of them?

Those are the rules I can think of off the top of my head that would help as far as squad building concerns go. In game mechanics would be a different story, although with Mice being diminutive the only other thing would be a "range" on shooters. Even something as simple as any shot beyond X squares you get a minus 4.

It would also be a good idea to before anything is set in stone to

A. see how many people would be interested in signing up for this if it were offered at GenCon
B. Play a few games in the format that is decided to make sure no other NPE's arise.

My thing would be, once rules are set for it. Try to break it. Try to create something that is competitive with the rules, and make it a something no one wants to see, and then maybe alterations can be made for that.

Do you think this could actually help a few pieces by giving them access to Blaster Upgrade? Something like Jango Fett, Assassin or Tyber Zann might benefit?

Gambit is not needed. Pieces with Override are the problem. Just give doors 50 hp per square and create a rule that doors can be attacked only when they are held close by override. That's how i house-ruled it and it works just great!

And @Caedus, the few changes i suggested are not really changing the game at all, they just change a few very extreme tactics and problems. I don't see the point, honestly. The V-Sets have done this in a far greater scope than i would with this few changes. Also, not all of my suggestions are of equal importance. Mainly the Override, Tempo Control and Galloping/Strafe are the big issues.

Do you honestly think by removing those extreme and limiting mechanics the game would become a "mindless roll+move+attack+repeat"-game? People had lots of fun with this back in 2004 with Rebel Storm, when only one character had override. I think you are exaggerating quite much here IMO.

It's funny how some people here are claiming that my suggested changes would change the game to a completely different game, and yet the whole gambit format has changed the way how games are played completely.

Except your suggestions are way more drastic than the gambit format. You are asking to change costs of pieces, remove an entire faction and more pieces, limit non-uniques, change the way ANY squad with a commander is played, remove auto damage and tempo control which have a way bigger effect on the game than gambit, and also asking to either remove Accurate Shot (a huge part of the game, and would also basically make Cloaked useless so there's 2 major abilities gone) or change the Damage of almost every shooter piece in the game. Oh, and an activation limit which would also change the way the game is played drastically. It would literally be a completely different game with all of the stuff you want changed changed. It's nothing like gambit at all.

Very well could, these are not concrete must haves for anything. These are just general opinions of what I think would improve gameplay. Like I stated at the end of it. Whatever rules/restrictions still has to be played prior to "Settling" If there is one thing I learned from playtesting the vsets, its that you don't want anything to pass through the cracks. Even when it sounds like a good idea.

Yeah, I combined posters a little bit there, my bad. With that said, some of the points you brought up would still effect the game more than gambit would drastically: Change costs of "some characters". This just sounds like wonkiness. Also, change "most" commander effects to only range 6 but make some of the weaker ones rangeless. It will be completely ridiculous to have the entire community decide out of every commander effect in the game which ones are weaker and which ones are stronger because someone is going to disagree and it's just going to be way more ridiculous than gambit.
So yeah, I guess most of my first points should be addressed to the person who actually said them (I can read mostly Flapper ) but those points are to you kkj.

You should probably add the door rules to your initial list.

@harryg i said that the whole "recost characters" point should be left aside for this. @TheHutts i'll do that. What are the opinions on this idea? Instead of gambit make doors "attackable" only when they are held closed by override? Each attack or ability targeting a door automatically deals damage, no attack roll needed.

Is there any structure to this idea at all right now... Cause I just see us throwing ideas out, and then people bashing them?

So.... If your interested in actually going to GenCon and participating in the event that these nice gentleman are attempting to create for us. Then voice opinions. If you have 0 interest in attending GenCon, then your opinion should be heard, and considered, but other than that nothing else.

Who is the person in charge of organizing the GenCon games for SWM? That person or someone else designated by them (easy to communicate between those two) Lets start with the simple things of Whow WILL/WOULD be interested in trying this out? Competitive and casual alike?

I would most certainly be interested as a casual gamer to appear for my first time, and attempt to bring some TN guys if they will leave their castles.

Who else?

Another random idea..... 4 unique characters per squad. Faction specific (Fringe being its own faction) Squad must be 199 or 200 total points

Set up 6 squares away from edge

All Doors considered open

Gambit is worth 20 points

Match time 30 minutes

Activate 1 character at a time

No Epics or 100 point pieces

To address the point of Override being the problem, isn't that why we have a 3 point Fringe piece with Satchel Charge? Not to mention the 15 point Fringe piece with Shatter Beam, which would be a solid counter even if we banned said 3 point piece?

I'm not going to fully commit myself to play in the event before I see the final ruleset, but any SWM event could potentially hold interest for me. So you can consider me a "possibly" if that's allowed at this point. I'm definitely intrigued by the idea, if for no other reason than a chance to play a new format.

Also, since I don't think it's come up here yet, there will also need to be a specific map list for the event. Will it copy the Restricted Map List (that competitive players use), or will it include others? Will it be WotC-only, or will it include the maps from Chris West (his independent stuff) and ArmoredCartographer?

But it makes your "competitiveness" dependent on the survial of your pieces with Satchel Charge - not a very good solution IMO. It's just the WOTC-kind of fix - create new stuff that you HAVE to play in order to stay competitive. I find that lock-out wins are annoying and cowardly in the first place and you shouldn't support this mechanic as a primary way of winning games. Why make the rules in such a way that players HAVE to use certain pieces to even be able to win games when you can just slightly change the basic rules so that you can play whatever you want without the danger of game-mechanical auto-losses?
