They are already 3 times that size. We just brought them out so they can enjoy the nice weather we are having. One caught a worm today and the others were chasing it around trying to steal the worm. It's nice and relaxing to just sit and watch them.

Well I was looking for this thread to resurrect it. I wanted to get it back up for April Fool's day but I got busy with other things. The chicken's are a year old now, and laying eggs by the dozen a day!!! Sometimes as many as 19 a day. We lost quite a few of the chickens to Hawks though. We are down to a little less than 20. Only have one duck left as well. Lost the other three. To keep the Hawks away we were told to put up a balloon. The constant movement will keep the Hawks from coming down and turning our chickens into their breakfast, lunch, or dinner. So we have a red Elmo balloon out there scaring the Hawks away. Elmo Monster from Sesame Street. Before the balloon thing I caught two Hawks in there chowing down. Also, chickens are cannibals, so ya gotta get the remains out of there or they will finish off what the Hawks start. I accidentally dropped a rather large egg the other day and they fell on it like piranha! It was completely gone in 5 seconds, shell and all. I'll try to get some recent pictures up when I can, it's raining at the moment. So maybe sometime tomorrow.

Do you have a rooster, or just hens? I've got a rooster and he seems to help protect the hens. But, he also "protects" them by attacking me sometimes.

Now that you mention it, we don't have a rooster. Just the hen's. I'll have to ask my Dad why he doesn't have one.

Little update, apparently we were extremely lucky not getting any Roosters. Meaning that the people who check the sex of the chicks did their jobs correctly. My Dad says he has had numerous problems with roosters in the past. They promptly became chicken dinners. This was my first time learning how to raise them. We started out with 30, lost 4 when they were chicks. Now we are down to 19 after the hawks. They are still producing eggs at a decent rate though. We sell them to our neighbor for his restaurant. We had 4 ducks for the longest time. Then we let them go into our pond and they spent the night outside of the chicken coop. Then they too were picked off one by one. To my knowledge we only have one left. I haven't seen him in a few days, but I did hear him quacking one morning.
